ZE4610 - Linksys 802.11g wireless woes

I just bought one of the OD deals on the 4610. I dropped in my cardbus 802.11g Linksys card in the slot and nothing. Drivers are all there and every now and then I get "open wireless connection available" from XP Home, but it won't ever connect up [8)].

1. I'm no dummy on these things, but for the life of me I can't get it to work on the HP (I had no problem on my last Inspiron 1100).

2. If the card isn't compatable (as I gleem from a few threads here), what card is the best one to get?

Any help would be appreciated.

Did you try to use different versions of firmwares on Linksys card?

Sometimes, upgrade or downgrade of firmwares may make it work.

I've been using Netgear WG511 for my Thinkpad T30. Somehow, after installing the newest firmware version 2.1, the card stoppted working(due to incompatibility with Access point? or some microsoft/ibm updates done to my T30? or ...). But, when I use the firmware which is released before 2.1, the card works flawlessly.

I haven't tried any of the firmware updates. I did try the latest drivers as well as the one I used before with the Dell lappy. I went WAR driving today and didn't get hit from my usual hotspots. I'm puzzled. [8)]

If you do a lot of war driving the best card are the lucent orinoco gold cards, or any other card with a prism chipset.

i also have the 4610. I got the Dlink 650+ wireless card. After reading posts at broadbandreports.com forums its a big issue with the 4610. I have alot of trouble getting the Dlink card to work and i even got a DLink router. After installing the drivers a million times i finally got it to work. One problem is that the Dlink signal monitor shows a good signal while the windows wireless connection always shows low.

I bought the Dlink 630 tonight at OD. It worked right off at the start, but the range really suxs and I'm always getting dropped connections. The range is not even close to that of the Linksys w/Inspiron. How is the Microsoft product? I'd hate to shell out $87 for the Orinoco Gold @ newegg, but this is really getting old.[V]

I hate to say it, but esp. with wireless you get what you pay for. I've had great experience with dlink, belkin, netgear, and all working, but they have very short range. Especially when compared to the top two cards Orinoco and Cisco. Linksys should be getting better within the next 6 months or so since now they are owned by Cisco so that they can break more into the home consumer market.

I'm taking back the Dlink and I've ordered a Orinoco b/g card and magnetic mount 7db gain antenna. WAR driving fool to-be.

Sounds like you should be able to do some great war driving w/ that. Let us know how it works.
