    Default Memtest error question

    Compaq v2000z:
I got often frozen in the past two week while I'm on the road (using MS S&T most of the time). Ran Memtest 86+ yesterday and got error on a specific address several time (after several passes).
I cool down the machine and reran the test again. It fails in different test number but same address.
I cool down the machine (again) and reran the memtest for 3rd time last night and no more error after 9 hrs run.

What does this mean? Bad memory? I'm using Corsair Value Select 512MBx2 DDR400. (stock was ProMos DDR333).

Almost certainly bad memory. I've had bad luck with Corsair Value Select. Return it and buy one or two Crucial DDR400 1GB sticks.

Thanks Brian. I reran the memtest again last night and no error for 10 hrs.
But I think I'll send it in to Corsair. Seem like it doesn't kick error sometime but when it hits, it hit the same spot.

I wonder should I go back to DDR333. I still have them (also 2x512MB)

I've got a pair of Crucial DDR400 1GB SODIMMs in my dv8000z. They've worked perfectly for, oh, 5 months now. You definitely want DDR400 but you do have to be careful about what brand you buy. AMD's high-performance integrated memory controller isn't as forgiving as Intel's old-fashioned external controllers are. I'll buy Corsair's XMS series desktop memory but I don't trust their Value line at all.
