After 3 years at 100% charge the battery ran for an astonishing 30 minutes. That means nothing bad can happen to your batteries if you keep them charging all the time, if a never-used battery lasts for 30 minutes then it's in perfect condition.

Besides, HP batteries are a bit different from those from Acer. Hint: they wear out a lot faster.

Just a little experiment for you: Try putting a battery in the freezer for 3 years, then tell me how long it lasts when you take it out vs one that has been in the laptop and charging at all times.
30 minutes of life for a 4 years old laptop is pretty good and i don't think that you can do better if you take care of your battery.

Putting a battery in afreezer for 3 years should be very nice in your world but in mine, a battery is to be used as a battery or as an alternative power in some case (blackout).

That's what an UPS is for.

An UPS is a battery. I've had my HP DV9500T on its expansion base "Charging" for over two years, and it still has the same 2.5 hrs of "life" it had when it was brand new. Newer batteries don't have a memory, and shouldn't need to be discharged on a regular basis. Having said that, I haven't seen any documentation that said it hurts to discharge a battery on a regular basis.
HP dv9500t (T9500, 4GB RAM, WSXGA+ (1680x1050), 511MB GeForce 8600MGS, Kingston 512GB SSD, 500Gig Seagate Momentus XT, Bluetooth, Fingerprint Reader, Webcam, Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit, Ubuntu Linux and XP MCE
MBP-15" Unibody, mid-2009, 2.8GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 4Gig RAM,500Gig Seagate Momentus XT. OSX, Windows 7 Home Premium using VMWare.

It's not about the memory effect, the NiCD days are long gone. Heat kills electronic devices, and batteries are no exception. That's all.

You can argue all you want but in the end i'm spending less money on batteries than you do.

Thinkpad has an option to increase battery life by lowering the battery charge threshold. I don't think any other brand has it. It also has battery maintenance mode to full cycle battery.
