Re: HP Mini 311 on sale!
For those that don't know how the system works, I will explain it briefly.
Both UPS and Fedex have computer systems that they supply to their big time shippers. These computers are able to calculate the cost based on the destination, size and weight of the package. You can input all sorts of variables before you print out the shipping label. Once you print out the shipping label you attach it to the box and all it requires is the Fedex or UPS truck driver to pick up all your packages. The drivers don't label them, they don't have to be 'called' in as one user was told by an HP rep. You have the label, all that needs to happen is the package needs to be picked up. The bar code, tracking number, etc... Its all there via the computers.
Telling a customer their item shipped and not actually having shipped it for several days later is simply bad customer service at best, and deception at worst. You can give HP a break, I don't care. But I refuse to do it and I refuse to let someone tell me that I need to cut them some slack. They are a multi billion dollar operation and don't need my slack. What they need is better management and policies. If they were a mom and pop store, I'd cut plenty of slack. But, alas, this isn't the case.

Eh, mine is the sameway. I was a little annoyed in the beginning but now Ive calmed down about it. I'll get it when I do.
Those benchmarks are flat out sick. I wonder if thats the N270 or N280 processor. Also what would the benchmark increase be w/ 2 gigs? This is gonna be fun.
LoL, feel free to call up HP and get a sales case manager about your shipping issue.. They are a fun bunch.

Yep, I can't wait to see this puppy in action. If the memory can be ugpraded I will keep the unit for sure. I doubt I will order from HP again, though. I also won't be recomending them to any of my clients anymore.
Anyone else agree that these would look even better if they decided to go with the straight colored lid? In other words, no pattern? I don't like the pattern, but I can live with it. I prefer the minimalist look.Last edited by ArchAngel777; 5th October 2009 at 10:47 PM.

Re: HP Mini 311 on sale!
Are you a fellow LOTRO player? If so, I will fill you in on the performance of this machine. I fully expect it to play non-moria environment pretty well. Mines of Moria might be a bit choppy though (due to the CPU). I know the 9400M can handle it fine, but the CPU will probably be the bottleneck there.
I also plan to test playing LOTRO unplugged to see 1) performance and 2) endurance. Another game I will try and test with is King's Bounty: The Legend. That is a kick butt game.
Also, for what it is worth, you won't see anything with a mobile Atom running 4GB of memory anytime soon. For all intents and purposes 3GB is the practical limit when you take into the account the memory addressing for BIOS, graphics, etc... Although in this case the graphics uses share memory, so you could probly utilize around 3.5GB or so in theory. With Windows XP though, unless you love to run several applications at once, even 2GB should be fine. I plan on running it with 2GB when I get mine.

this bad boy would work with the n280 cpu correct? If so that may not be bad. 4 gigs should be enough in a netbook

I play on and off and basicly the netbook would just be for a second character mule or ot play between night classes.
I figure i'd put win 7 on this and would want 4 gigs on it. Is it limited in the bios to 3.5 ? wouldn't make much sense if they plan on putting windows 7 on this.

Re: HP Mini 311 on sale!
All depends on the netbook but in the case of the 311 it will not. It uses DDR3 instead of DDR2. At work today though we were discussing if a 4G stick would work or the MB wouldnt take it. Also, what speed the DDR3 is at on the machine.
I'm guessing standard 1066 so....

Re: HP Mini 311 on sale!
The mobile versions of Atom are not 64-Bit. Only the desktop versions of Atom are. As such, it is limited to running a 32-Bit OS and applications. One of those limitations is the ability to only address up to 4GB. Since the BIOS, Graphics and other functions in the system need to reserve certain memory space, you are limited to 4GB minus whatever addressing is reserved. This generally works out to between 3GB - 3.5GB of usable memory. Thus the 3GB limit.
If a desktop computer had 2GB of dedicated video memory, it would effectively have only about 1.5GB or so usable system memory in a 32 bit environment.
