    Default HP Pavillion

I bought a HP Pavilion dv5215us around August of 06...Doing some research I understand that electronics depreciate drastically and I'm curious to know how much it would've been worth now because it got stolen (in the hands of a technician) and now he is asking my opinion of a price/value for it.

Check eBay completed listings for similar dv5000 series laptops. I'd guess $300.

Not even $300. Old laptops are extremely hard to price, given the huge decrease in price over the last few years. For example, a Compaq was (is?) on sale at Walmart for $298 which has a 2.1 GHz Sempron, 160 GB HDD, and 3 GB of RAM. Compare this with a 3 year old laptop with a 1.8 GHz processor, 80 GB HDD, and 1 GB of RAM, and there's no contest.

    Asus G50vt-X1: P8400, 320 GB 7200 RPM, 4 GB RAM, 9800m GS

Check listings on eBay, and maybe keep track of some current auctions as they close to see what the finishing price was. Odds are, it won't be worth much at all right now - in fact, there is only one dv5215us up for bidding right now, and with only 5 hours to go on the auction, there are just two bids and a current high price of $172.

More broadly, searching auctions on the term "dv5000" pulls up a list of 44 dv5000s, but the highest bid on any of them right now is $179.51, with 18 bids and 2 hours to go on the auction.

Now, bids on eBay typically escalate right at the very last minute, so a few of these might bear watching, but since the ones that have been listed with a minimum price over $200 haven't received any bids, it's a good guess that the fair market value of a dv5000 series .HP Pavilion is about $175 - $200 depending on condition and what accessories/trinkets it comes with.
