    Default dv7 slow startup problems

I recently got a dv7, and did a clean Vista install immediately. But since then, it takes a long time to boot up from the loading bar to the Vista logo. It probably stays at the loading bar screen for 5 or 6 minutes. I have done a memory test, a disk check, and defrag, but still no improvement. I have no idea what could be the problem. Could anyone point me in the right direction?

Here are the details for the most recent boot-up from the event viewer:
    BootTsVersion 2
    BootStartTime 2008-11-19T02:02:52.077Z
    BootEndTime 2008-11-19T02:09:51.528Z
    SystemBootInstance 32
    UserBootInstance 25
    BootTime 331314
    MainPathBootTime 284914
    BootKernelInitTime 41
    BootDriverInitTime 13677
    BootDevicesInitTime 190665
    BootPrefetchInitTime 60729
    BootPrefetchBytes 648749056
    BootAutoChkTime 0
    BootSmssInitTime 38554
    BootCriticalServicesInitTime 13661
    BootUserProfileProcessingTime 2719
    BootMachineProfileProcessingTime 5324
    BootExplorerInitTime 11351
    BootNumStartupApps 9
    BootPostBootTime 46400
    BootIsRebootAfterInstall false
    BootRootCauseStepImprovementBits 0
    BootRootCauseGradualImprovementBits 0
    BootRootCauseStepDegradationBits 1024
    BootRootCauseGradualDegradationBits 0
    BootIsDegradation false
    BootIsStepDegradation false
    BootIsGradualDegradation false
    BootImprovementDelta 0
    BootDegradationDelta 0
    BootIsRootCauseIdentified true
Not sure if these are indications of anything. Any help would be appreciated.

    5-6mins on a clean install?!

It could be one of your drivers having problems starting up.

    What programs have got installed?

Did you do any tweaks to Vista?

Do you have any USB/external devices plugged in?

    What programs have got installed?

MS Office, Firefox, Symantec Antivirus (not Norton), Daemon Tools, Winamp, and Winrar. All the common stuff. There might be some that I left out, but are there any types of programs that I should be aware of?

Did you do any tweaks to Vista?

Aside from disabling Windows Defender, Sidebar, and Indexing, I haven't really made any tweaks. And again, is there anything that I should be aware of that would cause this?

Do you have any USB/external devices plugged in?

I have tested it without anything plugged in, but it made no difference.

I also have a dv5 with almost-identical hardware. Both clean installed with the same Vista disc using the same procedure, both have the same drivers (for the identical hardware) and similar installed programs, but the dv5 never had this problem. Aside from the slow start-up, everything else runs properly on the dv7, i haven't really encountered any other problems.

Are there any utilities that I could use to check what exactly is taking up the time?

Symantec owns Norton so if the products aren't identical I would speculate they are very much the same. Since it should be easy to do, I would either disable your AV program or uninstall it temporarily and see if it makes a difference.

AV programs can cause quite long boots if they are not working properly and sometimes just a re-install of them can fix the problem (if there is one). If it were me I would eliminate that program as a potential cause first before expending large amounts of time in other areas.

do you have a cd in the drive? that would take longer to boot.

Just completely removed SAV and all its components, all still the same.

Try ccleaner and windows one care in order to optimize your laptop.

Have you taken a look in Device Manager to see if any of your drivers has a yellow exclamation point next to it?

Also, tied to the previous question, after you did your install did you install the HP drivers for your notebook or are you just using the drivers that Vista installed?
