Default V2405CA CPU Upgrade - Turion

Hey guys, I was just wondering if a CPU upgrade is possible with the V2405CA or any V2405 model.

Specifically I am trying to upgrade to an AMD Turion 64 ML-28(TMDML28BKX4LD). I already have the processor and I have tried installing it. Problem is once it’s installed and I go to power up the power light comes on and the scroll lock and caps lock LEDs flash in 1 second intervals and nothing happens as far as a POST.

I have already updated to the latest BIOS (F.27) on board ID 3097 available on the HP site and when I re-install the Sempron everything works again fine.

Would it be possible to use another BIOS from say the V2311US (almost identical it seems besides an extra USB and a Firewire) or would it brick the laptop. Has anyone successfully done this upgrade?

Any help would be much appreciated!

All V2xxx(AMD) series should share the same BIOS. So, as long as the other system also uses the AMD cpu, it should work. However, it looks like you have the defeatured motherboard which alsong with lacking the extra motherboard features might not support exactly support the Turions.

BTW, upgrading from the Sempron 3000+ to an ML 28 is more of a sideways movement rather than an upgrade. The only advantage the ML 28 is the extra cache but the faster clock speed on the Sempron will negate some of the advantage of the Turion. Unless you are looking for hardware based virtualization support then I really wouldnt bother with that upgrade.

miner, thanks for the info. You are correct about the motherboard not supporting the Turion series of processors. I contacted HP support about this as well and they confirmed that the board does not support 64 bit architecture, therefore no BIOS update or change will solve this problem.

    Reply from HP Total Care:
"I would like to inform you that AMD Sempron is 32bit processor and the motherboard preinstalled is compatible only with Sempron processor to a maximum of AMD Sempron 3000+ processor.

We cannot upgrade the Processor to AMD Turion 64bit processor even after upgrading the BIOS. The motherboard architecture does not support 64bit processor."
Hopefully this information will help anyone else thinking of a similar upgrade.

Baloney. I replaced a Sempron in a Compaq V2000z series with a Turion ML37. It should work. I'd guess that your new CPU is simply bad. My V2000z was one of the very stripped down Black Friday specials too, as low-end as you could get.

Ditto what miner said about it being a sidegrade. You should be able to find a good deal on a ML37 or better on eBay. Anything less probably isn't worthwhile.
