Re: Clean Vista install WITH NO ACTIVATION
Hello =)
Has anyone been able to make an updated tutorial for the HDX9250 series, with the new drivers etc?
Would it be better to install Vista x86 or x64?
Thanks!

Re: Clean Vista install WITH NO ACTIVATION
Nothing in the guide would really change for the new systems. This guide does not really get into details about which drivers you need to install, etc..., so it remains agnostic to specific model numbers. The bulk of it is a walk-through of the Vista install itself.
Drivers would come after and it's more up to the user to be able to install them. As you install the drivers, it really doesn't matter what order you go in, as long as you all get them in within the course of the install. Personally, I do chipset and video first, then wireless if that's not working yet, then everything else.Activation Backup and Restore (ABR) | Clean Vista Install | Screen DPI | RAM Testing w/ Memtest86+ | Where's my disk space? | Accessing HP Recovery Disc Files

Re: Clean Vista install WITH NO ACTIVATION
I got 84 processes running currently, do you believe doing a clean install, then installing everything would speed up my laptop, rather than causing more issues?
Thanks =)

Re: Clean Vista install WITH NO ACTIVATION
Careful, you hit a nerve there. I've ranted about this a lot on this forum, so I'll try to keep it brief:
The number of processes has ABSOLUTELY NOTHING TO DO WITH PERFORMANCE ON YOUR SYSTEM. Period.
Frankly it's an idiotic measurement, and you should tell anyone else you see who discussing "number of processes" that they have no idea what they are talking about.
As for the clean install itself, you will probably see some performance increase simply because there is not as much stuff installed on the system. The F-A-Q in the main guide talks about this a bit.Activation Backup and Restore (ABR) | Clean Vista Install | Screen DPI | RAM Testing w/ Memtest86+ | Where's my disk space? | Accessing HP Recovery Disc Files

Re: Clean Vista install WITH NO ACTIVATION
Orev, isn't the number of processes running in the background somehow directly related to how many programs are installed?
It seems logic that the more installed programs you have, the more processes will run in the background, causing the system to perform slower.

Re: Clean Vista install WITH NO ACTIVATION
Nope, there's no correlation at all. Most programs you install do NOT add a running process until you actually run the program. Programs like Photoshop, your web browser, etc... only add a process when they are running.
Other programs DO install things that run in the background, like firewalls, and some things have updaters or quicklaunchers that run on startup. Some of them are necessary for the service the program is providing to you, and others can be just crap.
A clean install can reduce the number of programs that run in the background that you don't need, because many pre-installed programs are ones that you don't need.
Processes definitely do effect system performance, but not because of the number of them. The only thing that effects performance is the amount of RAM, CPU, network, etc... The sheer number of processes is irrelevant.Activation Backup and Restore (ABR) | Clean Vista Install | Screen DPI | RAM Testing w/ Memtest86+ | Where's my disk space? | Accessing HP Recovery Disc Files

Re: Clean Vista install WITH NO ACTIVATION
The way I use to see it was that, when you first boot your computer, without loading any other applications such as Internet Browsers, Media Players etc. You then see how many processes are running, and you can compare that to how many run straight after a clean install.
A computer with Windows XP and 20 processes after a Clean Install, will at least boot faster if not run faster than a XP machine with 50+ processes. Some processes take up very little RAM, but they all add up.
I do also understand that you can get 20 processes that use 50MB ram each, where you can get 100 that only use 2MB, and thats less for the system.
Is this wrong?

have uncovered new download links that work to obtain the Vista files from digitalriver. This is great for anyone who needs the discs.
