Elitebook 8540w shutdown when running some applications (7-zip, Avast Antivirus))
- Windows 7 x64 bit;
- the original installed OS on the system: windows 7 professional 64 bit;
- full retail version;
- the age of system (hardware) one year;
- the age of OS installation: seven months after last installation.
Hello,
every time I run easeus data recovery wizard professional, 7-zip with large files or Avast Internet Security 6 my notebook shut down; I hear the fan spin fast and the temperature growing.
The shut down come after some minutes.
I wonder what is the reason.
Thank you.Last edited by cypherinfo; 22nd December 2011 at 10:26 AM.

Data recovery, large zip files and security software all have one thing in common. They are generally resource hogs, putting some amount of strain on your system's cpu and/or HDD, thus generating heat.
First investigative step for any heat problem is to simply visually check the air vents. On a 1 year old machine, depending on environment, they can get clogged, which would indicate a build-up of dust in the machine. Many internal dust problems can be taken care of by lifting the keyboard. Loosen marked keyboard screws on the bottom, slide the 4 tabs between the function keys forward, and gently lift the keyboard (without disengaging the data ribbon if only for inspection.) If there is a lot of dust, however, it would take removing the keyboard entirely, as well as other components including the heat pipe to be able to get to the fan housing. A job best left to HP, unless you're very sure of your capabilities.
If there is no apparent dust problem, you can get an idea of where the problem is by running a sensor scan while using your problem programs. For this purpose, I like the sensor scan in HWiNFO64, a free download and overall great system utility. It will tell you exactly what components are heating up, and by how much. High heat levels will throttle the system, but critical levels will shut it down. This will also give you info to report to HP, hopefully resulting in a faster repair of your unit.
Good luck.
