HP Probook 6550b sound doesn't work

I have an interesting problem with my new laptop. I hear sound from the speakers when Skype starts up and I can get sound out of the headphone jack but I get no basic sound when listening to MP3s, YouTube videos. My laptop is a work one and I have no admin rights to make any major changes. I am running Windows 7. I have been into the Control Panel and Sounds area and cannot see anywhere that I may have the sound down. The laptop is not muted. The sound was working when I first got the laptop.

1st of all, try reinstalling the audio driver, latest version.
Ask the person in charge for admin rights if needed.

We had the same problem when using the native microsoft driver (not everything works).
You need the HP sound driver.
