will a displayport to HDMI cable carry audio ?

I can confirm that if you have a cable that connects Displayport to HDMI it will also carry audio to your TV. The cable actually has an adapter built in one end that will manage the "conversion" of both video and audio
just got the cable displayport to HDMI and the video is great, but there is "NO" audio ???
Can / do I need to make alterations to my graphics card to also output audio ??
if yes, can somebody explain how to do this
    cheers guys

For me, I had to redo my NVidia Display drivers.
As you install the display drivers (some 257MB download) the installer will have two check boxes. One of those boxes says HD audio. Install that component. (leaving the other one unchecked did not uninstall my working display - so leave that unchecked)

I think that's all that's needed to send audio up the HDMI (DisplayPort) connector.

One reviewer, Bdbuhr, in this thread (page 6) was able to get the HDMI/DisplayPort audio to work.

I used it as soon as it was allowed and turned it off when they told us to on landing. Used wifi via gogo the entire time and watched a 1 hr hd mkv file. Ambient light sensor on and brightness about 50%. The laptop still had 20 mins to go on shutdown. That works out to a little over 5 hours of constant use.
Good time, is it 6 or 9 cell? I'm getting> 5 hours watching HD movies on flight with my 8440p, i7-640m, 8gb RAM, Intel SSD and 9 cell batt.

It doesn't do SATA6; DisplayPort will do audio out on my 8540W, as I'm having it send sound to my Dell U2410, which is outputting it to the speakerbar (power and audio jacks plugged into the U2410)

    still no audio
from what i have read at nvidia this issue is a driver problem which has yet to be resolved
ie..... in nvidia control panel output to TV is classed as DVI not HDMI
which causes problems accessing the audio on off control

This 8440P has the Intel graphics (driver 8.15.10.2202) which has no support for DisplayPort/HDMI audio.
The audio is IDT HD sound which is currently showing my "Digital Audio (HDMI) - is now unplugged".
My TV is a Sony Bravia and the family is currently watching it so I will need to wait to test it fully.

I've just plugged the HDMI into the DisplayPort and the graphics driver has recognised that it is connected. The audio driver is still showing the HDMI as disconnected.

I've also just noticed that the audio driver rekons I've got 3.5mm jack sockets on the rear (which don't exist) - will dig into the audio driver further to see if there is a better match for the 8440p.

[Update - I've not been able to make it work but I've just realised I'm using a DisplayPort to DVI cable connected to a DVI to HDMI cable! I'll get a direct DisplayPort to HDMI cable sometime and will test again. For now I have a 3.5mm audio connector in the headphone socket.]
