MSI GT680R 16F2 CPU Upgrade i72630QM 2nd Gen to i73920XM 3rd Gen
Hello guy's iv'e been knee deep in the web for the last four days strait. Comparing and reading hundreds of specs for processors and my motherboard. So I can compile a list for myself to see upgrade possibilities for my MSI GT680R 16F2, witch I currently have a i7-2630QM 2nd GEN processor in. I want to install this i73920XM 3rd GEN processor in my laptop. Im not worried about the small difference of 5watts more that the 3920 uses. I put in bold letters the things I had a question about working its the same socket, would i be able to upgrade the Intel graphics 3000 to the Intel graphics 4000 with some software or bios or something. The Lithography is 22 on the 3920 instead of 32 is this a show stopper? and every thing else seems like a plug and play if some one could print this out and compare for me I could really use the opinions of my piers on this thank you.

Re: MSI GT680R 16F2 CPU Upgrade i72630QM 2nd Gen to i73920XM 3rd Gen
seems like a huge waste of a thousand bucks, you could just sell your laptop and get a new one if you have that need for speed. However, looks like it should work. Your only concern should be about bios compatibility. I can't find specific information about your laptop, but if you post your bios and version, one could probably google it and see if this newfangled processor is supported.

Re: MSI GT680R 16F2 CPU Upgrade i72630QM 2nd Gen to i73920XM 3rd Gen
Yeah; too much money for too much (possible) risk for too little return vs. just simply selling your current system and getting a new platform - complete with warranty.
(With regards to IG 3000 vs. IG 4000 - that is hardware built into the cpu die... you need a third gen i7 to get IG 4000...).
Good luck.

Re: MSI GT680R 16F2 CPU Upgrade i72630QM 2nd Gen to i73920XM 3rd Gen
the show stopper is that you cant put a ivy cpu in a sb mobo, but the other way around is possible, and the 16f2 was launched using a 6 series chipset, thus sb only cpus are available for it.
You can look on ebay for some 2920xm, they are far cheaper nowThe cake is a lie, there is only pie, through pie I gain calories, through calories I gain fat, through fat my belt is broken, the recliner shal free me...

thank you for the feed back guy's. A friend showed me a small program witch popped up all my info. I found I have a HM67 chip set after the research the best thing I could put in this machine is a i7-2960xm thanks for the patients. I'm on the leaning curve trying to catch up to all of you, with all this flashing this, and bios that, upgrade hear and upgrade there. I probably should of paid more attention when I bought my first computer a (IBM Clone 386sx/512KB RAM/40MB 4500rpm HHD/AND 56K modem/ with VGA)

depending on what you do a gpu upgrade would be a far better option, and I would check the 2920xm, due to the lower price

Re: MSI GT680R 16F2 CPU Upgrade i72630QM 2nd Gen to i73920XM 3rd Gen
your right on the processor as far as price. and i have a gtx 580m in hand that im working on installing that will be a major improvement, the i7 2630 that came with it only supports 1066, and 1333 ram speeds so i mainly want to get at least to a i7 2720 processor min. on intels site it shows that processor supporting 1600 witch i have 16 GB of 1600 in it since i bought it but its only been running at 1333. see the dalema.

Unless something changes, you probably won't be able to take advantage of the unlocked multipliers in the 16F2.
MSI 16F3: GTX 680M, 3920XM OEM, 32GB 1333MHz, Samsung 830 256GB+Samsung 1TB, WD 12.5mm 1TB HDD, 1920x1080

Re: MSI GT680R 16F2 CPU Upgrade i72630QM 2nd Gen to i73920XM 3rd Gen
RAM problem solved for me i picked up a i7-2820QM for pretty cheap this CPU supports up to 32GB of 1066/1333/1600mhz DDR3 and Then i upgraded to win7 Ultimate now it shows ram speed at 1600mhz and i do notice a bit of a difference. one solution down many to follow.
Thank you for the knowledge
