    Default (PS3 + M17X-R3) vs (PS3 + TV): power consumption?

I have my PS3 hooked to my R3 (HDMI in).
But the wife is irked that I need to have my laptop running even though I'm just using the screen.

So guys, help me with my stance.
    Will you....
    A) Keep playing PS3 on the R3 instead of buying a $300 32" TV.
    B) Buy a $300 TV, not because you surrendered your dignity to her prowess, but because it would be better for the electric bill.

    Help?

I wouldn't be surprised if the TV used more power. The M17x idles at 45W and I don't think using the HDMI-in would increase that much. And here are power consumptions of TVs:

get a cheap kill-a-watt type meter, measure how much power the PS3+R3 combo consumes, and then compare with PS3+TV consumption.

The question you should be asking yourself is, "do you value your marriage?"

Sadly, once a woman becomes involved, that seems to outweigh most anything else in the decision making process

keep the wife happy, get a bigger tv ( 17" is way too small IMO ) and have best of both worlds. power cost should be minimal in the bill

I will lose the debate then. But come to think of it, it's win-win.

Even if the M17 uses slightly more power than the TV, you will NEVER make up the price of the TV. But if you and your wife seriously don't have a TV, maybe you should get one.

have to agree with this one...it is working in your favor...you get a TV!

but anyways lets just say the PS3 and laptop both use 500W total (this is way way more then they really use)

that would be a simple .5kWx24x30=360kW in a month

360kWx$.13=$46 a month and that is if they were running at ~max power 24/7

really you are probably using 200-300Ws so much much less.

really you are probably using 200-300Ws so much much less.
so he doesn't sleep or eat or anything, he plays continously for 24hours.
also 200W is way too much for this kind of use.

so considering 200W that is way too much and that he plays 12hours a day it will cost 12$ a month.
Even if a TV consumes 0W, which is ridicolous, a 300$ TV will pay off in 25years.

The awnser to the op question depends on the usage, on how much time he wants to pay off and in the price and power consumption of the TV.
There are several thousands of TV models, some consume MORE power then the M17x R3.
