Default How future-proof is the 675m?

Hey all, I'm looking to get a new laptop, but I thought this question was more for this subforum.

I'm usually not that good at reselling any electronics I own, and I thought I would own this laptop for about 3-ish years. If I was looking to run some decent games during that time. Would the 675m be "future-proof" enough to run crysis 2 and 3 at 1080p and other games like that for the next few years, or is the 7970m really worth the extra money?

    Thanks!

675m is a fairly good card (Well fairly is an understatement) however when looking at the GPU in a Laptop you have to also consider the CPU. Some Laptop companies like to put a CPU in that doesnt really hold up to par with the GPU or vise versa. Make sure you have a CPU that can compliment the GPU and you should be future proof for quite some time. Remember though a ton of changes can happen within 3 years.

P.S. - You cant really future proof technology because something is always going to be better tomorrow lol.

Sadly, I know this will always be the case. My budget can really only afford me a 3610m CPU (quad-core IVB) and 8gb of RAM, but that should be more than enough, no?

That CPU and RAM won't be the bottleneck for games for the next 3 years. IMO the 7970M is WELL worth the $100 upgrade. For almost twice the performance, $100 is nothing over the long run, and you won't regret it 3 years later.

When the 680m surfaces, months from now, there will be a nvidia option, but right now, the only logical choice is the AMD 7970m.

Given that the 675m is really just a bios flashed 580m, its not future proof at all. The 675m is based on 2 generation old 40nm Fermi tech. Its already outdated.

if i was to buy a laptop today, i wouldn't get anything less than a 7970m. At the time of writing this post, only the 7970m is an option...the 680m isn't available yet and no one knows when it will be, or if it will even stack up to the 7970m. All we have are rumors right now.

joelectron, if you are buying a laptop now, or in the near future, do yourself a favor and get the 7970m..the performance difference is huge.

I was worried about the age of the architecture used by the 670/675. Thank you for confirming this!
Now, to find an extra few hundred dollars...

It would be very difficult to find a quad core processor (from any generation of the "Core" series) that would bottleneck the GPU.

And I'm currently using a first-gen Core 2 Duo in a pre-unibody macbook pro. I have no concept of a CPU *not* being a bottleneck.

the 675M is about the get severely outdated by the 7970M. It will probably struggle with games in about 2 years, I'm guessing
    Old laptop: MacBook (Late 2009) Core 2 Duo 2.2 GHz, 2GB DDR3 1066 MHz Ram, GeForce 9400M
    Current: (5/30) P150EM, i7-3610QM, 8GB DDR3 1333MHz RAM, AMD 7970M, Matte Screen, 750GB 7200RPM HDD

    P150EM w/ 7970M Review!

So the 7970M is still the best choice? The only laptop available with 7970M is the Sager NP9170?
