Default Are there any 18.4" quality screens?

I own a Clevo P180HM and I hate the stock screen with every fiber of my being. The slightest tilt induces a colour shift. It has some serious spill issues. Vertical viewing angles suck. Overall, the screen really sucks. I have a 299 € eMachines that has a less crappy screen!

I don't mind spending money for a quality panel, but the problem is that there aren't a lot of 18.4" panels out there. Non TN panels would be ideal, but I'll settle for anything with decent vertical angles and fairly even backlighting, even if it's TN.

    Any recommendations? Thanks

Are you refering to the famous Samsung LTN184HT02 (RGB LED)-112% Color Gamut/ 1000:1 Contrast Ratio panel that equiped the those Sony laptops?

Saddly it seems it has been discontinued, according to this thread: The myth about 90% color gamut of samsung 1080p 18.4 laptop display

The LTN184HT01 is CCFL, so it is not an alternative.

That being said, are 18.4" owners stuck with chi mei panels? It saddens me that 18.4" laptops are a dying breed.

    Agreed.

Most people don't want a laptop bigger than 15.6" much less a 17.3" machine or god forbid an 18" monster. At that point people just get a smaller laptop like a netbook or a tablet and then a desktop. I say that people don't know what they're missing.

I hope there's a successor to the P180HM. Currently the M18x has no competition.

I absolutely LOVE the screen on my Alienware M18X.

It may not be the highest spec'd screen, and does glare a bit in light.. However, when tweaked, it is a very nice display.

Unfortunately, the P180HM is the last of the line Clevo has discontinued 18.4" models.

I agree that 18.4" is not for everyone's taste and needs, but it does fulfill the needs of a particular kind of user: people who need a portable device with a big screen. It's not a device for people who move around a lot, but for people like me who have to move from place to place now and then and do so by car, it is very convennient. A big screen, 3 HDD and lots of connectivity options that fit inside a single device that can be moved with a backpack. I was hoping that in a few years time we could see fairly lightweight 18.4" laptops but now that the M18x and an Asus model which name I can't remember are the last of the breed, I guess I'll have to settle with 17.3" screens next time I buy a laptop.

Do you know what monitor equips the M18x?
