    Default Fujitsu S6231 Hard Drive Repacement "How-To"

    I recently replaced the 40gb, 4200 rpm, 2mb cache hard drive in my Fujitsu S6231 with a Hitachi 7K60 60gb, 7200 rpm, 8mb cache hard drive.

    This was a great upgrade, speeding up all aspects of the computer- boot time and application startups/execution times decreased.

    I bought the hard drive at Newegg -

    So I thought I would take a few pics while I did the upgrade and share this with you all. Luckily for me, the hard drive access on the Fujitsu is just a cover with 2 screws.

    Here is a pic of the hard drive with the cover removed. The hard drive is in an aluminum sleeve-

    After diconnecting the hard drive IDE cable from the laptop, I removed the hard drive-

    Then I slipped the hard drive out of the sleeve-

    the little black rectangle in the pic is a shock bumper that came out of the hard drive bay- easily glued back in.

    Here is a close up of the IDE cable to hard drive connection-

    gently remove the cable from the old hard drive and connect to the new hard drive.

    All that is left to do is-

    - slip the new hard drive back into the aluminum sleeve-

    - put the hard drive back into the hard drive bay-

    - reconnect the IDE cable to the laptop-

    - and install the cover and 2 screws.

    I then used "The Ultimate Boot CD" (FREE) to set up the new hard drive. TUBCD has many great utilities, including hard drive, memory and dos programs. I used FDISK to partition the hard drive into 2 partitions.

    A 20 gb Windows partition and a 40 gb storage partition.

    Then I used the Fujitsu Recovery discs to install Windows.

    Overall, this was a super easy upgrade for me, especially since the Fujitsu has such easy hard drive access.

    After I got the Fujitsu up and running, I took the 40 gb hard drive and installed it into a Vantec 2.5" Aluminum Enclosure.

    This is a very nice enclosure- I got the red one for visibilty, didn't want to leave it in a hotel room!

    In planning for this swap I had exported all of my bookmarks/favorites from Firefox, Opera and Internet Explorer as well as Email Contacts and folders from Outlook to a seperate folder. Then all I had top do was plug the external hard drive into the Fujitsu and cut/paste the data to the 60 gb drive.

    After I transferred everything I wanted to, I just deleted everything on the hard drive- now I have a nice 40 gb external backup hard drive for all of my computers.
