Latitude X1 - 2GB RAM?
The maximum upgrade for the Latitude X1 is listed as 1GB DDR2. If I install a 2GB DDR2 module, what are the odds of it operating correctly?
Thanks.

Re: Latitude X1 - 2GB RAM?
Excess ram doesn't just "go away" and only use what the max is. If you put more than it's allowed, your computer just wont boot. Plus, why would you pay a lot more for a 2gb stick if you can't use it all?
As I walk through the valley of rice I shall fear no turbo, for torque art with me.

Use a memory configurator from Kingston or Simpletech and you'll see what your machine will accept. I agree with adinu why get something that won't work when you can easily see what does.

Re: Latitude X1 - 2GB RAM?
I am also interested in trying this. Could it be that they specified 1024 as the maximum upgrade because at the the time when the x1 was released there were no 2gb modules? To bad that i dont have any to try with

Re: Latitude X1 - 2GB RAM?
It's an interesting question. The X1 has the Intel 915GMS chipset. The Intel datasheet says the 915PM chipset supports up to 2GB and it does not indicate any difference in the total RAM supported by the 915GMS although the latter chipset is only single channel.
Slightly relevant is that the Intel 945GMS chipset in my Sony G11 does support a 2GB module. In fact it recognises both a 2GB module and 512MB of on-board RAM but can only address 2GB (I don't know which 2GB) although Sony lists a maximum of 1.5GB for that model. It seems that the only way to find out the answer for the X1 is for someone with access to a 2GB SODIMM is to try it.

Re: Latitude X1 - 2GB RAM?
Someone has tried it already?
While running virtual machines on my Latitude X1 the idea also came to my mind recently. However, it is quite difficult to get 2GB DDR2-533 SODIMM here and return (the best way is to ebay from USA but then it is not practical to return because of the mail costs).
I googled for the answer a little bit but this thread seems to be the only discussion of the possibility on the net.

Maybe this thread should be moved to Dell specific forum to get more response from those who actually have the notebook?

Re: Latitude X1 - 2GB RAM?
Yes I can confirm that a 2gb ddr2 installed in a latitude x1 did infact get recognized without any problems.

Re: Latitude X1 - 2GB RAM?
It usually wont harm the computer to put in too much, like said, it usually just doesnt boot. But anyway, just buy a 1GB stick. If you need 2, then its time to look for a new PC.
