Removing cd-dvd combo drive of LG LM50

Help and help... I've a LG LM50 notebook and its cd-dvd combo is broken.. I like to remove and therefore change it. The first step is to kknow how to remove the driver, can anyone help me? i didn't find an efficient way... I'm grateful..

XP doesn't need driver for the optical drive. Just take out the old drive and put the new one in.

Thanks and sorry for the mistake. In reality, i ask about how to take out the optical drive and which screws to loosen?? Or i have to remove all the bottom cover of notebook?

I am assuming that this is not under warranty? If it is still under warranty, you may want to let LG do it. Taking off the case is generally not very warranty friendly. A good place to start is the manual. The procedure usually is covered somewhere in the manual. I couldn't find one on the net. My guess is that you are going to have to take off the keyboard and part of the case because the drive is attached somewhere in there unless it is a modular drive. I recently upgraded a Compaq Presario to a DVD burner and that is what I had to do. Every notebook is different. Do you know which drive you are going to replace it with? If you buy one from LG it obviously will fit but will probably be more expensive. If you buy an off the shelf burner you may run problems with the bezel and firmware. Often the bezel on the new drive won't match the old one. It is possible to reshape or swap the bezel. Also you may run into problems with the firmware. Slim drives do not have jumpers like a desktop drive. It is usually set by dip switches inside the drive or the firmware. Most slim optical drives are OEM, meaning you won't get much help from the maker. You better off getting a drive from the same maufacturer. So if it is a Pioneer drive in there now, get another Pioneer. They tend to things the same on their drives so it would make it easier to swap the bezels. Hope this helps. Good Luck.

Well, it's not under warranty because it's broken by my mistake. The drive is Toshiba. I screwed the coomputer but it was impossible to remove the cover easily. I believe, as you said, i must take óff the keyboard. i'll try [^]
Please, dont u think it's better for me to keep it in its place and buy an external usb drive? is it be possible to boot from it? any problems for such solution? i checked the prices and i found that external drives are cheaper.

You are probably less likely to break it with an external drive. It will be less convenient, but if you are not moving it much, its probably the safer route. Whether you want to try is up to you. I did not find it that hard, but I got lucky because the drives were the same size. My Thinkpad was a different story. They use a super slim drive which I could not find. I would have had to swap or reshape to make it fit since they have the eject button in the lower corner. My Thinkpad does boot from the external LiteON DVD burner I bought. You have to find out if your BIOS supports booting from a USB device. Check the boot order in BIOS. If you see USB device, it probably does. You may have to change the boot order though. Good Luck.
