Default SOLVED: How to overclock GTX 680M in Alienware M17x R4

So my shiny new M17x R4 just arrived, and I was of course eager to test the GTX680m overclocking potential ... Just to find out that neither MSI Afterburner nor EVGA Precision X nor nVidia inspector got the GPU to overclock. While I could set gpu to its maximum of +153 MHz and the RAM successfully overclocked, the gpu remained at its default 719 MHz no matter what (even though GPU-Z and Inspector reported the higher clock speed and even an alledged Boost clock)! Anyone else had any success in this matter or even any idea what the problem is?

    EDIT:

The newly released BIOS A05 resolves the problem!

GPU boost is working and overclocking the core is now possible up to a maximum of +135 MHz - running @894 MHz core now!!

    Use nVidiaInspector.

What program are you using to check the speeds? Run MSI Kombustor and let us know what it reports.

You`re not alone. Apparantly Dell have locked the VBIOS or something so that Alienware users can`t overclock their 680M. However a different VBIOS seem to do the trick since there is some french people who have overclocked their Dell 680M with the R4

today i tried to tweak the 680M in my R4 to see what it can do.

using msi afterburner i was able to raise the clock to a maximum of 854Mhz and set the memory to 2300mhz.

both, gpuz and nvidia-inspector showed the numbers correctly.

next step: starting up furmark as well as 3dmark11.

memory-oc went just fine (standard: 1800mhz, oc: 2300mhz), but the core-clock wouldn´t go up one freakin mhz during both tests.

since "hackness" over at the sager-board was able to oc his clevo 680m, im wondering if dell/nvidia managed to block oc´ing via vbios?!

    i doubt that.

when using 3dmark11, the max. temperature has been ~65°C, using furmark its ~66°C.

it´s more like dells going "thanks for buying our high end gaming system including high end prices, now please off" (again!)...

My R4 with 680M is arriving on the weekend

SO yeah what do I need to do?

and eventually I'll probably want to set up a permanent mild overclock, that'll be there whenever the laptops plugged in or something

Yeah, although the 680 is running cool it would have been at the design stage during the 580 overheating debacle. Probably just playing safe. Same reason for the 2gb, that is what they tested with so stay with what you have tested. It's a dell philosophy, there are a bunch of CPU's that work but dell will only sell and authorize what they already support.

Go to techinferno to download a modified GTX 680M (DELL) vBIOS and flash it to unlock the +135MHz limit

So just using afterburner to overclock wont work? We have to unlock something first?
