For the simple reason that they got their hardware to market before Nvidia did.

I'm no fanboy, although I do have a 5650 card in my current laptop. The reason? When visiting the States before moving here, my old laptop died, and I had to get something semi-decent to game on, and Office Depot had an HP in stock that had the same.

In January, I came into position to buy a replacement laptop, and waited for Ivy Bridge to release as it seemed sensible to get the latest tech. And AMD came out with the best card on the market, so rather than wait around another 6 months and pay about $200 more for a card that might (we still don't know for sure) beat the 7970, I dropped my money on what was known and available at the time.

And I suspect I'm not the only one in this position.
I couldn't agree more, the reason that you see alot of people with AMD cards is because its the only viable option at this time. Were not going to pay more for 675M to get half the performance at stock clocks, that just makes no sense. I prefer Nvidia because of their UI and their drivers have always been good to me. But I could not see paying $150 more for 675M. I run a GTX 580 in my desktop and very happy with it. But as of now I'm also very happy with my 7970m in my laptop. The only reason that I would upgrade to a 680m would be if I started having major issues with the 7970m. As of now I can play all the games I want to on it at very good frame rates. No crashing or issues, battlefield 3, crysis, shift 2, etc all run great.

Not crappy laptops, just overpriced and not really catering to enthusiasts anymore. Asus is focused on the lowest denominator. They don't care about the enthusiasts and reseller as much anymore, they want huge sales at NewEgg, Amazon, TigerDirect and BestBuy. It's just a different targeted audience.

People who are shopping for laptops on Amazon, TigerDirect, NewEgg or BestBuy won't have a clue what a Clevo/Sager is and Alienware would be well beyond their budget. Asus pretty much has that target crowd to themselves, so business wise, it was a smart move.

+$286 over the 7970m. Most interesting thing was that the estimated ship date for the system I built was 6/18.
