I think a single overclocked gulftown processor would have been better. Games can't take advantage of that many different cores, so making less cores faster would net better performance, not to mention infinitely cheaper.

Also they only have a 128GB SSD and a 1TB hard drive for storage. Much more benefit would be had by having a handful of 256GB ssd's in raid 0 than having to waste even more money on the dual gulftowns and 4 480GTX's.

This reminds me of maximum pc's ultimate gaming rigs from when I used to subscribe to that magazine. All way ridiculously over the top and a flagrant waste of money that not even someone with an unlimited budget trying to make the best gaming rig would buy. If I remember correctly one year they spent over half the money on some dumb ultra-fancy way-overpriced LCD monitor.

Funny thing is, it will be obsolete within a month, haha.
Man you have no idea about components do you? High end parts usually last 3 years before they start to choke on applications. The 8800 ultra was released Q4 2007 and yet it still plays all ur games fine on near max settings. This setup will last a LONG time, i guarantee it a minimum of 4-5 years.

maybe he was referring to the fact that by the time this computer is finished the ati 6xxx series and sandy bridge will be coming out, and hence it will no longer qualify as "the best"?

No way. I have a spare 8800GT and it is really lagging these days. Sure it was great and still is good, but if you max everything out on any game that has come out since about fall '08, you will have a slideshow or worse. And the only way to max out everything with it even when it came out was to run them in sli. High resolutions and AA demolish that card sooo hard.

Think about the hardware that was around in '05-'06. Complete joke compared to today. It would be asinine to spend so much on a computer and not upgrade it for 4 or 5 years. You would be far better off spending less money and upgrading components every year and be able to max out every game as it comes out anyway. Building a beast of a computer and hoping it will last is a big joke.

Yeah, folks with good $1500 machines from 2-4 years ago ago don't really need to upgrade right now to play current games. So I think you are right.

Folks with two year old 280 GTX cards or 4870 cards can comfortably wait for 580 GTX or 6970 (or even just grab another matching video card and double up).

And those folks with four year old Q6600 CPUs that game can probably hold off until Sandy Bridge (even though Nehalem was tempting their patience will be worth it).
