I am not too keen on Steam versions because you might find yourself unable to use older patches which can be useful at times.
How do you think my desktop setup would be able to handle it?

I didn't do too bad so far. $4.50 for operation flashpoint: Dragon Rising and it's currently my favorite game. Multiplayer don't work with windows 7 64 for some reason so I had to use Vista 64 instead.

Multiplayer however sucks, because no dedicated servers or p2p system...+ being hosted by a guy with 512kb upload at times is horrid. Overall it's still a very good game, but I think Codemasters could of made this game so much better. I like how you can't snipe a guy across the map with a pistol like you could in MW2, lol. You could also change fire modes, go to prone, give orders to individual players or the whole squad, and the maps are big. These details is what makes this game better than the cod/bf games to me.

Campaign mode is where it's at. It's tough on Hardcore and the fact that you can't take on a few squads by yourself...and having to rely on your team...is what makes this style of game better. Also there is a community that made an auto downloader, where it will auto download maps and more missions that the community makes:

AutoDownload Support Achieved - Codemasters Forums

It's pretty cool. What's sad is that this game could of been so much better if codemasters fixed the multiplayer aspect.

No idea, I don't know anything about AMD chips. I do know that it seems to prefer Nvidia GPU's though. The laptop you are selling should play it very well though. Ask here, they will know.
