What temp. range should a GPU be running at?

I have a Dell Inspiron 1520 with an 8600M GT, and after intense gaming the temperature will register about 66-68 C. Idling it will default to lower clockspeed and reach 53-55 C.

I have heard of ASUS G1's idling 70 and peaking at 90 C, but my desktop's GPU idles at 37 C, so these temperatures seem quite high to me. Converting to Fahrenheit, that's about 130-150 on my laptop. I always remembered the rule that electronics shouldn't be exposed to >120 F.

Do these temperatures hurt the hardware? Or are they made to withstand such high temperatures? What's a common range?

Those are actually decent temperatures really for a mobile gpu. My Go7400 often hits 75-80, which while hot is still perfectly safe. The GPU won't shut down until it reaches about 110 or so degrees to avoid damage.

Temps are never measured in Fahrenheit either, so your idle temps are actually extremely good, let alone anyway wrong as you seem to think! Mine idles at about 55-65.

My G1s goes from 74 at idle to 85 under load with a zalman cooler. Without a cooler, it can go to 101C

Oh well my 7800GTX goes up to 105 sometimes usually at the very stressing resolution of 1920x1200. Don´t worry about those temps. These are mobile cards that are designed for extreme heat. Now I don´t run with a laptop cooler, not always it goes up that high, usually around 93 degrees celsius. I have though overclocked it of course and put Arctic Silver 5 on the GPU and CPU.

Do like this, undervolt your CPU and by that lower the chassi heat and thereby lowering the GPU heat. It will help a little at least. Also remember to clean out your fans, that is open up the laptop completely and clean out the fins on the fans.

Mine hits 92-93 Celsius at max stress.

At native resolution with eye-candy enabled, games will generally hover around the 80 degree Celsius mark.

Computer components are rated for FAR above 120 degrees F. You might have read it wrong, it should have been 120 degrees Celsius.

They don't always survive the trip above 100 Celsius, but they are generally rated for 110-120 Celsius max temps.

Your temps are fine. It's when I start hitting 100 C that I would double check the manufacture's specs.
