Default Replacement DVD Drive Supplier?

I need a replacement DVD drive for my Lifebook N6010 (17" notebook). Can anyone recommend any retailers? I'd prefer not to have to send the computer off just replace a disc drive.

Thanks!

safest bet is to contact your notebook (fujitsu) maker. contact info should be in the manual or the website.

What is the model number of your existing burner? It's very likely a standard slimline burner which can be replaced by one from such as these at Newegg.

This thread may also be of interest.

Thanks for the replies!

Device manager reports the drive as a MAT$HITA DVD-RAM UJ 8305. I am assuming this means its really a Matsu$hita (Panasonic) drive. EDIT: Sorry, I had to put the dollar sign in there to fool the bad word censor. You know, this censoring thing can sometimes go too far...

Once I figure out what to replace it with, the next step is to figure out how to physically replace it. Fujitsu, in all their wisdom, did not make this drive so it can simply slide out. So, it looks like I get to take the computer apart unless anyone out there knows if there is a way I can replace it without major surgery.

Thanks. Matsh!ita 830S is a standard component.

There's usually a fixing screw somewhere around the edge of the burner, so look around the bottom of the notebook around the edge if a 5 to 6" square which corresponds to the footprint of the burner. The screw goes into a bracket fixed to the burner (you will need to transfer the bracket - the fixing holes are in standard places). The screw may be under another cover or inside the battery bay. If there's no screw on the bottom then the other possible screw location is under the keyboard.

There is only one screw on the bottom near the drive. Nothing in the battery compartment. I took out the screw, but the drive showed no signs of being loose. Should it be obvious? I didn't want to use too much force to try and pull the thing out.

If that screw is close to the perimeter of the optical drive module then it could well be the right one. The module may be a tight fit in the chassis while the electrical connector on the back should also be reasonably tight (but still a push fit). I would open the drawer on the driver and then give it a moderate pull, gripping on the metal. Don't pull too hard on the plastic bezel.

If there is still no joy then it's time to look under the keyboard (that area could probably benefit from a good clean anyway).

I removed all the screws from the bottom of the computer. I was able to remove a plate around the fans which revealed a metal tab where the edge of the drive should be. Alas, taking a pair of needle nose pliers and pulling rather forcibly on the metal bracket of the drive did no good. Didn't even budge.

Looks like its the keyboard route. I'll have to find some good instructions on how do that. I did find some here, that may work, but I'll have to check more closely since the computer in the article doesn't have multimedia control buttons like I have along the top of the keyboard.
