anyone upgrade to 3700+
Has anyone swapped the proccesor in thier Gateway/Emachines to a AMD3700+? How hard is it to do? Is this a worthwhile upgrade for the 400mhz. difference? I'd like to max it out eventually but if it's not a big deal I'll wait to see if the price drops on the 3700+ proccesor.

It is theoretically possible. However, you must remember that eMachines come with the mobile Athlon 64, which is a cooler running version at 65W max output. The DTR maxes out at 85W, meaning more heat at load.
Overall, I do not think that you will see a huge difference in performance overall.

They have an mobile athlon 64 3400+ running at 2.2 ghz for about $300 if I recall. Check that out, personaly I agree with reverenddc on it, ur not going to see much improvement, I mean if ur playing games, maybe, but you still have to be plugged in for decent game play most of the time.
AMD has dual core set for late this year, so just wait. I'm sure they will create a dual core version. Whether our laptops will support it or not is another question.
For any significant speed boost, upgrade your ram and hd. The harddrive is what slows it down alot, I personally have a 4500 rpm and I think pc2100 because it only operates at 166mhz. So get the ram and hardrive and I think you will feel like your flying high once again.

Dual core AMD chips will not support socket 754 (the 128K memory controller is required), nor will they be coming in Athlon 64 this year. The release will be for Opteron first.
