Diefer's Dell fan control utility-please post your experiences

It would be nice to have a sticky forum post where users could report the use of this utility. I am using it on my Latitude D520 with a Core 2 duo T7200 and it works perfectly. I have complete control over fan activity with this utility on this particular model. It didn't work on my new Studio 1737 however and the constant fan noise made me return this laptop. I believe, having a utility to control fan activity on your laptop is essential and I wouldn't buy a laptop if this wasn't a option

Don't control fans w/ it. Use it to monitor it.

Make sure it reads the correct temp by comparing and tweaking to other tools.

I echo what Achilles is saying. The fans turn on for a reason. If they are turning on too often then I would suggest searching this forum for the term "cooling".

As far as I know, it doesn't work on the vast majority of the current crop of Montevina notebooks. Yeah, I wish the guy would keep developing it, too...

ya its a no go on the m1530. I too would like to have fan control.

The main reason would be to keep the system temps from bouncing around. While gaming, the tempts begin to climb torwards 70C and then the fan turns on from medium to high. Meanwhile it continues to climb to 76C and then finally begins to drop back to the mid 60's. At which point it shuts off and guess what? The temps go right back up to high 70's and this cycle is repeated over and over again.

If I had fan control I would set it to max fans when i knew I was going to do a long term, sustained, high use session. This way the fans wouldn't bounce around the temps.
