Re: using laptop for long hours
It may get pretty hot but nothing to worry about if it had proper ventilation. I leave mine on overnight and have no problems.

Re: using laptop for long hours
Ive got dn insprion 6000 too, I find the heat control quite good, my hard drive never goes over 39C even after leaving it on doing stuff all day.
In the ergonimic (sp?) sense, using a laptop for a while is meant to be a little more strainful on the hands and arms, especially if on your lap.

It does have little effect on the computer, it cuts down its life span but it is very little, probaly under 1%. But i leave my computer on all the time and i havent had any trouble after two years.
