    Default 700m Question

Ok here's the thing, my 700m got some surface scratches when I put it in my school bag ( this was before I got my Targus back pack, which I just gave back acytually because the straps are strangely too short, and Im not even that tall).

Anyways, these scratches are bothering me - they're on the front lid that appears to be some sort of silver painted plastic. While cleaning my garage, I stumbled upon an old bottle of GT 88 Scratch Remover. It's a creme and the bottle says "Wipes out surface scratches on any colour paint"THere's a picture of a car on the front....

    a) Is it safe to use on the painted surface of the Inspiron
    b) The bottle is pretty old ...maybe 5 years, does this stuff expire?

    Thanks!

I really don't think that's going to help you. I think you're better off just leaving the scratches alone.

Sorry to hear that. I have first hand experience that products intended for car paint use are not intended for anything else. When you scratch a car, you usually only are scratching an upper layer of the paint. Scratch removers actually just remove the paint down to a level where the paint is still not damaged. So in essence, scratch removers are just abrasive formulas that take off paint till the scratched portion is gone.

I don't recommend you try that stuff on your notebook. Best is to just leave it alone. I know I wouldn't want to be taking anymore paint/coating off my notebook than already is.

In the car world one of the techniques used to restore paint/remove scratches etc is to wet sand... I did this on some carbon fiber paneling and it turned out great, was nice and shiny when I was done...

I would just try it on a little part of the scratch, i've never used the scratch repair stuff but i would give it a shot... if it bothers you enough there is always ebay for a new panel.

how deep are the scratches exactly?

queshy, don't use that car stuff, my roommate got scratches on his HP zt3000 notebook just like yours and we tried some "scratch remover" and the result was an utter disaster, it took paint off the lid and it looks horrible now and nothing can be done about it.

Thanks abaxter, I won't use the paint remover stuff. I'll just live with it, besides it's not that bad at all, just an annoyance since it's so darn new.

If abaxter tried it and it had negative effects then dont try it... I've never tried it so I'd go by what abaxter says...
