Re: ->The official POST ABOUT YOUR NEW DELL NOTEBOOK thread. <-
I had 3 OS's on my HD, decided to dump vista and just stick with XP and Ubuntu.
I love how I people tell me about how they like vista for the pretty aero glass interface, then I show them my pretty compiz configured ubuntu desktop. It's the cube that's always the clencher
oh, and I DO have a desktop cube for XP too, yod'm 3d.

Re: ->The official POST ABOUT YOUR NEW DELL NOTEBOOK thread. <-
wheeee! ordered mine New Year's Eve and it shipped today! free next business day shipping, so that means Monday, I guess. bit of a bummer that I'll have to wait with anticipation all weekend, but I guess I can't complain when I was expecting more toward the end of next week rather than the beginning, even expecting that it would be earlier than the estimated ship date of 1/16.
so here's what I'm waiting for:
XPS M1530 Crimson Red
Intel Core 2 Duo T7500 2.2GHz processor
1440x900 screen (I think the only upgrade I made to their "Best" option, apart from adding Microsoft Office Home and Student 2007 Software)
3GB memory
250GB 5400rpm hard drive
256MB nvidia GeForce 8600M GT
am wondering whether I should have opted for the 9 cell battery or even the 6 plus 9 backup, but I don't know that I'll often be taking it places I can't plug it in anyway. and I'll probably regret not getting the accident coverage, but I'm pretty careful *knock on wood*
*waits*

Re: ->The official POST ABOUT YOUR NEW DELL NOTEBOOK thread. <-
yay! got mine today!!

lovin' it so far, except for the damn touchpad, but that was expected. gonna have to get a real mouse pronto.
still slowly feeling my way around the machine. setup was a PITA. hate reading all those stupid agreements and trying to figure out what the heck I'm supposed to do next.
ETA: have noticed a slight "clicking" sound from the hard drive on occasion, but its not too frequent or annoying. also, after a few hours being on, no intense programs or multitasking yet, there is a bit of warmth, but nothing uncomfortable, so we'll see when I push it a little harder over the next couple days how the temps feel. again, overall so far so good. think this machine will be a good fit.
as stated above, it's an
XPS M1530 Crimson Red
T7500 2.2 GHz
1440x900
3GB RAM
250 GB HD
256MB 8600M GT
etc.Last edited by johnnyel; 8th January 2008 at 01:51 AM.

I went with the screen I wanted (resolution wise... quality remains to be seen). I also went with the 8600M GT.
Dell just wanted too much for the processor and especially memory... with Penryn here today, it should drive Merom prices down, and perhaps we will get lucky with a BIOS upgrade... and be able to install a early Penryn...
Ordered January 2nd, supposed to arrive today.
Now... I understand the new revision motherboards are going out on builds after the 1st, which supposedly fixes the headphone jack noise, and as far as screens go.. I think that sight unseen you may end up with a grainy screen on any laptop from 14" to 15" these days.. Sounds like I'm making excuses, but I'm not. The MacBook Pro has the exact same issues. Probably uses the same screen(s).
So... anyway, way I see it, if my screen arrives and it sucks, I'll be chatting with tech support that day, and getting a replacement out of them... and using my first day anger (fake) to explain why they need to compensate me for my time... in dollars. Dell or otherwise. Or they can have it back right now.
I fully expect to be successful.
Guess what happens to the MacBook Pro folks? They get ragged on by the 'rogue geniuses' (their tech guys) for being to picky, don't get anything fixed, or even an option to replace it, and charged a $200 restocking fee if they want to return it in the first 30 days, unless they get it waived... and that usually means contesting the credit card charge, and playing it heavy handed. Nice. And they say Dell sucks. Guess what happens when they bring it up on the Mac official site? Threads locked and deleted. Nice.
I think my $800 buys quite alot.
I'll upgrade memory to 4gb as soon as I know I'm keeping it. $70 for 4GB.
I'll see if I need to upgrade the processor for any of my apps... though the longer I hold off, the better and cheaper the new one will be at around $200, and finally, I plan to switch out the HD to an external case, and buy a new one.. Also when and if I need it. $117 for 250GB.
So folks... thats the $1100, 2.4ghz core 2 duo (or faster),4gb ram,250gb HD,8600M GT, 15" laptop plan.
