Obviously, with the deal on upgrades and the coupons, the Inspirons will be cheaper for high end specs. But the Vostro will be cheaper for mid range specs and below....which really are high end, but mid range in regards to what's configurable.

It is funny watching all the people who ordered Inspirons trying to convince themselves they made good purchases by making unfair comparisons like that. Stop fretting over the fact that you may not have got the best computer for the money.....it's not a competition.

From what I can tell the lower priced Vostros are a bit of a better deal at the lower end and the Inspiron deals get better somewhere above $1200 or thereabouts with coupons.

Also, I just noticed this in another thread here, both the Vostro 1500 and Inspiron 1520 with 8400M and 8600M have DDR2 ram, not the DDR3 found in higher end graphics cards. Specs at dell.com show the same. Kind of a bummer but I don't need bleeding edge.

so any one can tell us 3 important issue :
    1. how the memory will come with 1GB on the new 1500 vostro ? ( 512X2 or one stick ?)
    2. do u think the memory will be only in the back of the laptop or one memory
in the back and the other under the keybord ?
    3. can i upgreat the memory bymyself with out changing the memory under the keybord ( if there one over there ) ? i mean, can some one give better answer about not having the same memory in the two slot - one 512 and the other 1 GB or more ?

It IS like that. That was found out back when info was being leaked before the actual models were out to the public.

1gb will be 512x2...not only because dell is cheap but because it says it right on the page "1GB Shared Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM at 667MHz, 2 DIMM"

I agree. I ordered my inspiron yesterday and it came out to $1262 before tax with t7500,2gig,160 gig hd, 8400 gs intel 3945 and bluetooth. It kept coming to almost $1700 with the vostro. I do like the black, but I think I can deal with the inspiron....

Yeah, I really don't know then. I don't want to go ****ing around with the laptop and the keyboard, and if having 2 gigsof ram in 1 slot and 526 in one under the keyboard will mess up the computer...I really dunno.

EDIT: ALso sucks for you guys, no sales tax in NH!

i dont know what you guys are doing, but i got $1,173 not $1700 with the specs you listed. that swith the $150 ram upgrade too, which i dont know why you would upgrade that, but whatever

and Hyperluminous i do agree with you about how people keep bashing the vostro to justify them buying the inspiron line.

So basically the Vostro is the better deal for mid-range specs and the Inspiron is a better deal for high end specs.

Vostro for low-mid range, correct. FOr instance, my original order was a Inspiron 1521 (AMD Athlon) that was about $849, then when I changed to this Vostro, it was a WAY better laptop for about a $150 cheaper. I got to buy a backpack too with the saved money!

In contrast to the 1520 and 1720 it might not be too huge of a difference, but if you were going with the 1521, it's night and day.

I must say the all-black look of the new Vostros is quite sleek, but if the finish is anything like the jet black offering on the Inspirons, then I won't be a fan of it. The jet black of the Inspiron line is a fingerprint magnet and does not have the subtle yet smooth touch to it like the other colors do. And again, though I almost think I'd prefer an entirely black laptop, I do not see how the prices on the Vostros are so much more competitive.

Here is my Inspiron 1420 config + price (reposted from another thread):
    Intel Core 2 Duo T7300, 2.0GHz, 800Mhz 4M L2 Cache
    2GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm
14.1 inch Wide Screen WXGA+ TL LCD
NVIDIA (R) GeForce TM Go 8400M GS with 128MB dedicated graphic memory
    120GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition, English
8X DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive for Inspiron
    Integrated High Definition Audio 2.0
    Intel 4965AGN Wireless-N Mini Card
Integrated 2.0 mega pixel web cam
    Creative Earbud EP630
56 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion Primary Battery, for Inspiron 1420
85 WHr 9-cell Lithium Ion Additional Battery, for Inspiron 1420
    Dell Wirless 355 Bluetooth Mod
    3 Yr In-Home Warranty + 15 month McAfee

Total: $1160.88, plus got a free upgrade to 2nd day shipping AND a $100 coupon good for anything on Dell.com

Now if someone can find a similar or even better deal on a Vostro, I'm all ears. It is possible for a lower pice on lesser specs/shorter warranty, but as this is what I've already ordered and how I wanted it configured, I believe the Inspiron is still a great price and the best bargain.
