dell service tag number Q

i am trying to sell a dell laptop thorugh craigs list and a guy wants to know the service tag number to my computer. Is it okay to give it to him? he says he wants to verify the specs with dell. Can you do this with the service tag? if so, where?

I think he is looking for more proof that you aren't trying to scam him. Giving him the service tag number should not harm anything.

Just don't give him both the service tag and the express service number. If he has both, he could transfer the laptop ownership to him and then call you the thief. But yeah, just giving him the service tag number will be fine.

You can convert the service tag to express service number there. So I don't think it matters that much if you have both.

Doesn't the original owner need to call to transfer warrenty. Also he can't call him a thief because I am sure they will be able to see that he is the previous owner

Can warranty be transferred to other countries as well? What happens if the original owner is from a country where Dell sells directly and the new owner is in one where Dell operates through an authorized service provider?

The service tag can be used to tell the complete history of a computer, its hardware configuration, warranty information, etc. It has nothing to do with the actual ownership, since Dell is not a police agency. Now if your laptop was stolen, and with a local law enforcement direction, Dell can tag the service tag # and next time someone goes to their website for updates or drivers, Dell will record the IP of the suspect and turn it over to the proper authorities.
