I still have the original Dell install on the factory hard drive as I swapped it straight out for my SSD and reinstalled Windows when I received my laptop.

I have just stuck that back in and booted into that Windows install, ran a speed test in IE whilst connected via ethernet and it comes out as it should do - at around 50/60 meg.

I have checked the driver version, which came back as 7.48.823.2011, which was different to the one in my SSD install. So i stuck my SSD back in, found that version of the driver on a HP website, installed it and ran a speed test in IE (as opposed to Firefox that I have been running them in normally). However the same issue occurs and I'm back to 2-3 meg.

Surely then, to my mind this proves it isnt a hardware fault and must be some kind of settings issue within Windows? Any ideas?

That's extremely strange.... Sorry for the late reply.

hmm.... try getting into device manager, clicking on your driver, power management tab, and untick "allow the computer to turn off this device to save power".

    see if that works.

    No worries.

Have just tried that and doesn't seem to have made a difference, still coming back at 2meg.

However, out of interest I have just booted into safe mode with networking, ran the speed test in there and it it coming back at 50/60 meg, so potentially startup/software related?

I have tried turning the obvious ones off such as antivirus (Microsoft Security Essentials) and Windows firewall, but this hasn't helped.

Maybe need to turn off all none MS services in msconfig and enable one by one?

give it a go! It might be your registry throttling your laptop.

After this try a set of CCleaner, and if that doesn't work. I'll have to look up registry editing in a bit and run you through that.

I forgot to ask, before you installed MY set of drivers, did you uninstall the realtek LAN drivers from programs and features? I'd say try that too, delete everything from your programs and software section and let the drivers be unknown, then reinstall your drivers manually from the zip i gave you.

    sorted it!

Was a Cyberlink PowerDVD startup process, I have the new Version 12 installed which has some kind of media library included, there are 3 services associated with this:

Cyberlink PowerDVD 12 Media Server Service
Cyberlink PowerDVD 12 Media Server Monitor Service
    CLHNServiceForPowerDVD12

Disabled those, rebooted and bam! Back upto 60meg

got pretty lucky actually, was one of the first set of services I re-enabled.

Thank you very much for your help over the past day, you're a star

NP, don't think that I was giving you a hard time for a common question...searching these forums can be tough with all the info here. I bet this thread and it's 40000000 pages of information has that answer many times itself, but who's going to read through all these posts, lol!

Hey guys, no worries I didn't take it like that...
I understand that giving the same responses time after time can be grating.

That's why I posted as a Newbie, I looked through probably 200 threads and didn't see it and yes the search function didn't yield any results either.

I just got the laptop about a month ago and until this week have been too busy to fool with the minor issues that I have noticed...

BTW Dell will be out tomorrow to replace the main and daughter boards in order to resolve the USB 3.0 issue...

Anyway, Thank you guys again, you are most helpful and I appreciate you imparting your knowledge to the lesser knowledgeable.

Glad to hear it. I was in a foul mood yesterday from work and realized after the fact that it could easily come across in a bad way...

So you got hit with the USB 3 issue too eh? Maybe I better get a USB 3 device and see if mine is all good, I've had the system for a year (practically to the day, lol) and have yet to use a USB 3 device in it. USB 2 mode seems to be fine... With all the people having this issue, I hope mine is all good. I have a few software titles that are tied to the ethernet MAC address and it's a pita to get the license switched...which I'd have to do for a mobo switch.

As an fyi to others, using Google to search for something using the "site:forum.notebookreview.com" command at the end does a far better job than the built-in search here. Still doesn't solve the thousands of pages issue
