Is installing a SSD something that is fairly simple to do? I am not an idiot, but I am also not familiar with upgrading laptops at all! I've upgraded a couple of desktop components in my time, but nothing advanced.

I would be able to follow a set of clear instructions and get the job done, but I would need those instructions. Does anyone know of any guides I could use, preferably specifically for this laptop?

    Thanks in advance.
To you and spassvogel this driver installation guide is good Clean Installation - XPS 17 Wiki

Installing an ssd is pretty simple theres only 1 screw to take out of the back panel which shows the hdd's and ram.

A quick run through would be to remove the hdd's first install the ssd, install windows and drivers. Reinstall the hdd and wipe it (format it) if need be. Then disable defrag etc on the ssd.

Thats alright it is pretty easy to do. There are four little screws holding the hdd and spare caddy in but be careful! Some are screwed in very tightly, or they were on mine atleast. After the screws are out holding it down to the mobo, it simply slides backwards using a black tab to disconnect it from the data/power connector.

What ssd have you got out of interest?

I haven't even got one yet, nor the laptop. This is my pre-research - to see if it's even worth (given my knowledge level) researching which one to buy!

    Could you recommend one?

Edit : I mean could you recommend an SSD? I've already ordered the laptop!

I've seen it mentioned here a few times now, so it definitely looks like the one to get.

The M4 or if you can find a reasonably priced Samsung 830 it is a little better than the M4 and just as reliable.

I'd avoid the Intel 520 personally, it's based on the same Sandforce controller that the Vertex 3, Force 3, and co are based on, and even Intel hasn't gotten all the BSOD issues fixed from what I've seen. Crucial M4, Intel 510, Samsung 830 are all great though. Personally I love the M4, but have limited experience with the other 2 to be fair
    Laptop: XPS l702x | i7-2720QM | Nvidia 555m + Intel HD 3000 (Optimus) | 8GB 1333MHz (Corsair) | 1080p AG (no-3D) | Intel 6230 WiFi | Crucial M4 256GB SSD | Seagate 500GB 7200RPM | Backlit KB | 9-cell Battery | Blu-Ray Reader/DVD+CD Burner

    Desktop: Q9550 @3.4GHz | GA-X48-DS5 | 8GB DDR2 1066 (Crucial) | Gigabyte 560TI @ 900/1800/4000 | 2x 22" 1680x1050 | Vertex 2 240GB SSD | 2x WD Black 1TB (RAID 1) | Antec 300 Case | Antec TP3-650W PSU
    Still an awesome system!
