Its not mega loud and the speakers can easily over power the fan noise. But anyway id rather have a loud fan than a overheating system!! glad you figured it out neo.

@sketty that seems like a pretty good deal, i'd be happy with that

Thanks Sam. BTW Do you think I should replace the battery? It's just 4 months old like I said and has 20% wear level acc. to HWMonitor. Hardly giving 3-4 hours per charge. 9-cell

Well there not cheap, from dell there like over £100 for a 9 cell last time i looked but you could ring dell up and try and claim for one. Mine is 10 months old and is 20% wear.

The new laptop I only have had from today keeps crashing, Ones when listening to music on youtube so I remove flash and reinstall it, Then again on youtube so I remove crome and reinstall it then again a few hours later. With no other programs running it then crashes when steam is downloading games, later do some light gaming [company of heroes ] the settings were not even that high then that crashes. Whats my best bet now? Reinstall windows or try and get a replacement.

    Thanks

You'll have to play the game with phone support. I found, being polite and let them run the script. After that, if thier fixes don't work you can get a replacement. I spent twenty minutes on the phone with then and three days later they replaced my screen.

This Laptop flies with a 64GB M4 inside it with a fresh install of windows in the second hdd bay, very pleased with this combination.

Was surprised with how good the speakers are too, they sound great.

The power lead falling out too easily is annoying, im tempted to do the pins mod mentioned on this forum or add some kind of additional elastic tension to stop it moving so freely.

Overclocking the GPU is a must for games, the 555m can then handle Mafia 2 in stereo 3D nicely

I'm still looking for the ideal power management settings and a simple way to switch power profiles....

So Dell is sending out a tech to replace my motherboard, fan, etc. Will these items be new or are they factory refurbished? My laptop was bought new and not from the Dell outlet. The tech person on the phone said they would replace "like for like" and assured me I wouldn't be downgraded on my parts. Does that mean I may end up w/ an upgraded or more current production motherboard? Is my processor going to be replaced to? I currently have a 2630qm. This is all getting replaced due to a recent temperature problem that develoved.

they will use whatever parts they have available....more than likely they will be refurbished because the fine print says they can do that.

don't see why they would replace the processor if they said motherboard and fan thats all they will replace

they will have to put new thermal pads on the cpu and gpu however, don't know if you could get some better thermal paste by then and see if they would let you put it on while they switch out or not.

and just fyi be prepared for the tech to either not show up or be late and more than likely not have the correct parts, also take pictures and document anything you do not feel is right. some of these techs don't have a clue what they are doing.

and above all else make sure you turn it on and use it after they 'fix' it to be sure everything is ok before the tech leaves.

also not sure if you've read this one but you can set your processor state to something like 90-99% while on battery and you may be surprised at the temperature difference (lower) and it shouldn't affect gameplay etc.

The laptop is fast & silent (I don't seem to be having the intermittent fan problem some are reporting) and the screen is quite nice. Surprisingly I thought fonts and buttons would look much smaller at 1920x1080 on a 17" screen. Pleasant surprise. The antiglare coating is a bit thick for my liking, resulting is some 'frostiness' on the screen but I can get used to it methinks. After all, I have a similar but thinner coating on my 24" monitor. Colours are nice but not as vibrant/saturated as my monitor. I guess that's to be expected since the latter is a P-IPS screen.

Already read my email and posted on some forums from it. Watched a full HD (1080p) Youtube video and listened to some music. Now I need to transfer some of my favourite programs to it, along with a bunch of music and films later.

So far, so good. I'm happy. I can see why some call it a destop replacement though because of the screen size and CPU power. Plus it has the same hard disc capacity (1.5GB) and RAM as my desktop. In my case it will truly be a desktop replacement for I'll use it mostly when I go visit my family for 3 weeks 2-3 times a year. When I'm home, well, I have a desktop.

Even tested the webcam. Never used one of those before. Now I need to set up a Skype account.

This being the first laptop I've bought, I have a lot to learn about function keys, settings and the like. How often should I plug it in to recharge the battery if the laptop isn't turned on except once a month to update windows?

I have uninstalled McAffee and replaced it with Microsoft Security Essentials. Also removed eBay. Browsed through the programs list and I'm not sure what else should be removed. The ebook reader perhaps? Nero? (I tend to use Starburn & Ashampoo as burning programs). For some reason I was expecting a lot more crapware. What's there seems reasonable and the lappy does feel quite zippy.

Read yesterday that the new nVidia drivers offer up to 25% improvement in Skyrim. Since this is the game that I'll play on this laptop when I visit my parents, I'd like to install them. The last nVidia card I've used was a Viper 770 -been a Radeon person since then; do I need to uninstall the current driver or can I just download the new ones and the installation package will take care of that?

    Thanks in advance.
