Please try this guys to confirm if its the same for you!
It definitely impacts performance. I tested using 3dmark 06 and you get a significant drop when you do this. The temps do stay low but it's not free.

im guessing this may be because unless the cpu gets to 100% its not going to kick in turbo boost and so your not getting the extra when running the test.

If the display does not show up regularly then it could just be settings in the NVIDIA Control Panel resetting every time you boot up the system. It will also help if you can tell us what drivers you are using.

Turning off the USB 3.0 power management feature might help with the problems you are having. The program is located in your All Programs list or you can search for it by typing USB 3.0. Then just check the box and press OK. If you are still having problems then trying downloading the latest driver from the Dell website.

There is no significant drop while gaming and even if it drops a few fps, i think thats worth saving 20c

Ive tested it around skyrim including whiterun with lots of npc's and there is NO fps drop with the cpu set at 99%, at 99% i got 69C max temp and with cpu at 100% i got 82c max during that playtime, so temps are significantly reduced with no or little performance cost in real world gaming.

It may be the settings but it is happening in the same boot. It seems to have trouble recognising that there is a second monitor attached, but eventually you can get it to find it. Then when you try to extend display onto it, or use projector only etc no image appears on monitor.

    Intel driver is 8.15.10.2622
    Nvidia is 8.17.12.6959

Does the HDMI port and the DisplayPort both connect to the GT555M or is one to the onboard? Also how do i know if my computer is using the GT555m and not the onboard?

    Thanks.

Does anyone know if the dell system software is needed after a fresh install of windows - I am going to put Windows 7 Pro on later so I can use XP mode.

It is not one of the drivers that came in the drivers folder on the hard drive, and I was assuming that contained all the drivers for your laptop - but it is listed in the drivers section (dell website) for the l702 so Im not sure now.

Hi there. Anyone aware of any coupon codes for the XPS17? I searched and tried several but can't seem to find any that are valid.

    This 10% coupon works until the 15th - $QNS1F9F4MRCMH

Also there is this coupon for £90 off an XPS 17, could save you more money depending on how much you are spending to start with - 33HH7WGDVMNZC9
