I've just ordered a Dell XPS 17" 3D laptop. Not expecting it til May.

    My two questions are this:

    1. Does it support SATA III hard drives?

    2. Does it support 1600MHz RAM?

Dell says no on both but I'm ready confilcting stories online. If you use either or both, please comment with a confirmation. Thank you.

    1) Yes, L702X support SATA III hard drive. (as far as I know)
    2) Depend on your CPU, a 2720QM will support 1600MHz RAM

Can else anyone confirm if the 2720 can handle 1600? Other threads/posters are saying it can't

Another question on RAM - I've never upgraded it before, and when I go to newegg, there's different types (10664, 10666, etc) - does the type matter at all?

Also, are there any brands that I should stay away from? Any recommended brands?

All we know so far is that Sandy Bridge is capable of SATA III. Who knows if this required Dell to invest any money to support it, which they may have deemed unnecessary. I guess I'm just a pessimist. I really hope someone throws a SATA III drive into their L702x soon. I'm buying a SATA III capable 256GB Crucial C400 most likely, but they aren't released yet and my laptop is still in "delivery prep".

Can someone with a 2720QM confirm what speed memory Dell shipped you? 1600hz or 1333mhz?

I can answer you this one for fure!
    !!!1333mhz!!!
I just take out 2x2GB from the machine and replace by 2x4GB

    hynix 2GB 1Rx8 PC3 - 10600

And there is no 1600Mhz SODIMM in the market yet :-)

    Great, thanks for the info!

    This is the only 1600MHz I'm aware of: Newegg.com - Kingston HyperX 8GB (2 x 4GB) 204-Pin DDR3 SO-DIMM DDR3 1600 (PC3 12800) Laptop Memory Model KHX1600C9S3K2/8GX. Do you think the quad-core i7s (I guess more specifically, the motherboard) would support it?

Do you mind running SIW on your laptop to see if it mentions SATA III anywhere?

Thanks for the info everybody. I'd assume the system would take a SATA III hard drive but would it actually be running at SATA III speeds though?

Looking at the i7-2720QM and above processors, it shows support for the 1600MHz speed but again, would they clock down to 1333MHz.

Regardless on the memory, the price difference on the Kingston 1600MHz compared to any 1333MHz is about marginal so I may just get the Kingston 1600MHz RAM.

My L702x w/the Blu-Ray burner is sleeping at the local Fed Ex tonight, but should arrive here sometime tomorrow. I'll post the model no. as soon as I get a chance.

If someone installed 1600MHz RAM and the system downclocked it to 1333, would I be able to get better performance by just installing 1333MHz?

1600MHz downclocked to 1333MHz should be the same as just 1333MHz.

No, they should perform the same. If one has lower CAS latency then it would be a bit faster.
