Dell XPS 15 1080p Screen no longer available

It's been available pretty much anywhere except the US.

Dell UK never lost the option...

Sucks - US company, and they don't provide the best here.
Inspiron 15R Alloy Edition with i7-740QM not available in the US at all...
XPS 15 1080p display not available here...

What're they thinking?

Dell UK did lose the option for a while (I wanted one, but it wasn't there), but regained it on the 14th December and has been there ever since.

Well, I pulled the trigger on one with the 720p screen and ordered a replacement screen from ScreenTek. They supposedly have the original AUO17ED part in stock for $167 plus tax and shipping. Crossing fingers this turns out OK...

I also bought 8GB Kingston RAM from New Egg for $100 shipped. Dell's RAM prices are silly high.

I think some of us need to go on ahead and open up a "screen" thread that features all the possible alternative screens for others to follow since the currently offered screen are pretty bad...anyone?

Will do, but you really have to question the wisdom of my approach here since the first thing I'm going to do when I get my new lappy is void its warranty.

At first I thought I would try to sell the old screen on eBay to recoup some of the extra cost (which isn't really much more than Dell was charging anyway), but now I think I might have to keep it in case I need to swap it out to have it serviced...

It will not void your warranty, so long as you dont damage anything whilst doing it.
Dell provides the manuals for replacing the display, and only state that if you cause any damage it wont be covered under warranty.

Also they wont provide support for the replacement part unless its a Dell part

My 720p display does look great compared to my 1680x1050 screen on my 1520, however I need the 1080p badly. I love the contrast and colors but the lack of resolution is killing me.

Since folks here are talking Jan-Mar for 1080p availability, I'm just going to hold off and see what pops up new in 1H2011.

For toying around, I ordered a ThinkPad Edge 15", to drop a Phenom II x920 Black Edition into, already ordered 8GB 1333 RAM + AS5 from NewEgg.

Should be a decent toy to play with for under $700 total investment.

I must be a bit confused -- what is the actual, maximum resolution of the 720P screen? I also have an Inspiron E1505 (that is about 3 years old) that shows a maximum resolution of 1680x1050 and an Inspiron 1525 (about a 1 1/2 years old) that shows a maximum resolution of 1440x900 -- I can't believe that the older models have a better resolution than what is available for the current XPS.

I believe the 720p resolution on the XPS 15 is 1366 x 768, which is actually the standard when it comes to 720p res these days.

As to why your older notebook as a 'better' resolution, I believe it has got to do with aspect ratio.

Newer notebooks are moving away from the 16:10 aspect ratio, and towards the 16:9 one instead, which explains the 'lousier' resolution. The next best resolution that you can get would be the 1600x900 I think.
