Default My M6600 with Extreme i7 and Quadro 4000M is slow!

    Hey Guys,

I got an M6600 from eBay last week.

It has an i7 2920XM and a Quadro 4000m card. 16 Gigs of RAM.

So I thought it would run like a beast.

But the performance in Photoshop, Maya 2012 and other programs is not so good as I thought.

I tried different drivers and stuff but - hm Im not convinced =/

Run it on Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit.

When I run 3DMark 2011. The highest FPS I get in the graphic tests are 15fps.

So is that normal? Thought it would run fluid.

So anyone here with the same dell config that could tell me how his Dell is running and what drivers and stuff he installed. Im so disappointed.

Optimus is Disabled in the bios. and the bios rev is 0.7.

    Hope anyone can help me!

    best regards from germany

My system is very fast. My current specs are:

    2820QM
    NVIDIA 4000M
    16GB PC3-12800
    M4 256GB SSD
    WD 500GB 7.2K

    Windows 7 Ultimate 64bit (SP1)
    BIOS A07

As a basic reference, my WEI is:
    CPU: 7.5
    Memory: 7.8
Standard Graphics: 6.4 (Optimus ON) / 7.2 (Optimus OFF)
    3D Graphics: 6.4 (Optimus ON) / 7.2 (Optimus OFF)
    Primary Disk: 7.9

What are your reference numbers? Do you have the original OS image installed or was it redone? Are you running anti-virus software? If so, which one?

Your M6600 should be a beast (I had kept an eye on this auction lol), but from the 3dmark11 score, your CPU is not performing as it should.

Run throttlestop, it should definitely help.

Install Throttlestop 3.0 and run it with the same settings as here:

(don't take in account the red circles)

Then just "Turn on" and leave the software open (you can restore it)

    Re-run 3dmark11 and see if there's any improvement !

You said you bought the machine from eBay? Did it come with a 210-watt power adapter (or higher)? If it came with the wrong power adapter, that could explain why the CPU is running slow.

You will probably need a 210- or 240-watt power adapter to get full speed. You might be able to get one if you complain to whoever sold you the machine on eBay. In any case, I know the model number for the 240-watt is PA-9E (I see plenty listed for sale on eBay).

While the 6600 comes with a 240 watt adapter,I have used my friend's official 130 watt adapter and all my games still perform at same performance compared to the 240. I hope your adapter is recognized correctly in the bios, the computer seems to spaz out if it doesnt recognize the adapter.

OK, I have just run the same benchmark with my M6600 and it appears the problem is NOT the M6600. It is the fact that the NVIDIA business class video drivers are not compatible with the 3DMARK utility so the results are not factual or based on the true potential of the GPU.

    My detailed results are below.

I would use some alternative real-world applications/utilities to test your operational performance.

I have started shopping for a laptop that I want to last me for many years to come. I am headed back to school in August for Mechanical Engineering. So I will need something that will run Inventor, Solidworks, etc. I will also do some gaming from time to time, but eventually I'll be rebuilding myself a decent gaming rig. But for now all funds are concentrating on buying myself a laptop that will fit my needs for school and hopefully beyond.

I'm hoping to be able to find something on the outlet or on ebay as configuring a laptop as I would like on the website quickly gets up above $3000 in a hurry. $3100-3600 is often where I end up. I would like to keep it between $2500 and 3000 at the very most.

My biggest concern is the GPU. I was very happy to find on here that I do have the ability to start with the M8900 and upgrade to the Quadro when I really feel its necessary or have the cash laying around. But I'm curious if I should even consider a laptop with the ATI card vs the Nvidia. I will admit the savings of starting with the M8900 is very attractive, I just do not want it to end up being a waste of my time and money. But for the first couple years of school I can't imagine we will be doing anything terribly complex that the M8900 would not be able to handle.

I'm also curious what people think about the XM processors vs the rest. Is the unlocked processor really worth the money? Does the extra speed really show in your daily use or use of any of the professional apps or even gaming?

Thanks in advance for any input!
