Re: Latitude E6400 Owner's Lounge, Part 2
What is wrong with I8kfanGUI? It still works a treat for me?
EDIT: Also on a side note, I downloaded the Dell System Software:
http://supportapj.dell.com/support/d...id=-1&impid=-1
And installed it, then it asked to reboot, so I did, but I dont see where it has installed it, there is no addition in the add/remove programs, no new folders under Program Files and a short google does not really help much at all.....?
Am I doing something wrong?Last edited by CyrusB; 3rd December 2009 at 09:50 PM. Reason: Added Additional Question

Re: Latitude E6400 Owner's Lounge, Part 2
what os are you using? the dell system software is just a compilation of a bunch of KB updates by MS that are system specific. it is optional whether to install them or not, but normally i don't trust dell on picking which MS updates i need
it doesn't have 64 bit support for vista/7 because it is not properly signed, but you can get around that if you want to. if you are interested, let me know.
it can control the fans, though very poorly because the bios just overrides it almost immediately - and then it fights back, so you set fans to high speed and it bounces back and forth.

Yeah, that's what I've always experienced. If he has a way to make it work properly, though...it can control the fans, though very poorly because the bios just overrides it almost immediately - and then it fights back, so you set fans to high speed and it bounces back and forth.n o n s e n s e - w a r s . c o m

Re: Latitude E6400 Owner's Lounge, Part 2
Well With T11 and A18 the fan control works without the constant fighting. OS is XP 32bit.
And about the dell system software, well if all it does is the M$ patches, then I wont bother, and opt to have control over that myself.
Still I was under the impression that it looked for newer BIOS and newer device drivers as well, but now i go and re-read the blurb about it I see that I had misunderstood it.
I have had HP and IBM laptops in the past before that have had programs that do exactly that, they check for the specific model of laptop with the manufacturers website and check to see if there are newer drivers, then you have the option of downloading or installing them, pity Dell does not have something similar.

Re: Latitude E6400 Owner's Lounge, Part 2
Hmm, force fans to full speed works fine under T11 and 32bit XP, but auto and manual still fight. Do either of those work properly for you and/or anymore else? Are you using the latest i8kfangui and how is it configured? I'd like to try A18, but it's not listed on Dell's site?

Re: Latitude E6400 Owner's Lounge, Part 2
I'm still very happy with my E6400.
It is not perfect but I suspect that anything else would be less suited to my needs.
The UL30VT is more an alternative to the E4300 but without the optical drive and with a much lower CPU.
If you don't need CPU speed or the real estate offered by the E6400's WXGA+ display then maybe the UL30VT is an option.
