I couldn't find a webcam driver on win7 64 or 32 pages at Dell. I did find one on the vista 64 page. It installed and claims success [webcam 1.6.3.309].

However when I try to run the Dell webcam central [1.01.04] I get Fail - an error message stating "Close the other video streaming application to start video".

This is a virgin build. I have not yet installed any apps, so I find it hard to believe something is sitting on the webcam...'

Couple notes that may be relevant:
    - this is a 6500 (i traded in the 6400 with intel graphics for a 6500 with nVidia)
    - I used the webcam centrall install disk from the 6400. (webcamdell.exe 32)

    Thanks for any help/suggestions.

it did that to me too. i installed the drivcer, then webcam central, and then REINSTALLED the driver after killing the webcam in device manager (uninstall). it worked for me, let me know if you tried.

    Not sure I follow exactly:

    - I installed the Webcam central software, but the Webcam software said it needed drivers to work.

    - I installed drivers (vista 64 drivers)

    - (after restart) webcam software fails (but driver in DM says OK)

    - I uninstalled and re-installed drivers (while webcam s/w is shut down)

    - webcam software still gives error above about being in use

    - I installed skype

    - Skype video works.

Veritas72 -> You talk about uninstalling WC software through device manager, but DM is only for drivers. More detail might help me.

no, i meant install the drivers first. then the dell webcam central software, then UNINSTALL the drivers from DM, then restart and reinstall the drivers from dm. it got it working on my end.

i also note that i use an e6500 -- im sure there isn't any difference between the cd you had for the webcam software and the one i had -- but if you want my webcam software, i have it rar'd -- let me know,.

It seems like ever since I installed Windows 7 my GPU temps have gone up dramatically. They definitely shouldn't hover in the mid 60s to 70s should they? I don't recall the specific temps from Vista, but they surely weren't so high.

Is there any program that can determine what is using the GPU the most?

If you want accurate temperatures, get Nvidia System Tools. On your way, get the latest drivers for your GPU over there (Geforce M or Quadro NVS160M drivers will do) - uninstall your old video card drivers FIRST.
I think it's just your program that monitors the temps that is wrong.

    Nvidia system tools:

    Nvidia Drivers (for Win7 64-bit - Quadro NVS 160M)

Please allow your laptop to cool down completely (turn it off wait 30min), and turn it back on, to re-monitor the temperatures (temperature change doesn't change instantly right after driver installation)

    Thanks for the help

It turns out the issue wasn't with Windows 7, but rather my new monitor. Whenever the additional monitor was plugged in the temperatures would be significantly higher.

Does everyone's dock station / port replicator work fine in win7? My sound has "lack of bass" issues coming through the mini port-replicator.

    Backgound:
I did my best to update every key driver to the latest from Dell's support site, with minimal additional software. I don't see anything that looks like a "docking station driver" yet.

I started by laptop in the docking station, and it seemed initally to be partly unaware that it was docked.

    - Video worked
    - network worked
    - Power worked

    - Sound didn't work
    - USB didn't work

So I tried a few things:

EDIT: I moved the usb cord to one of the ports on the back of the dock and it started working. It was in one of the side ports before. Also - the sound is working now, but I am not convinced it's right - still testing. Not sure what caused it to start working.

EDIT 2.5: Sound lacks all bass via dock. USB works as long as the USB is connected into a rear port.

Current status - sound has poor quality via port replicator. Currently hacve sound running direct from laptop. I'd like to fix the issue with the dock/port-replicator's sound.
