Default Inspiron 1764 black screen after Dell Logo disappears

I have a Dell Inspiron 1764 (A08 Bios) and you can switch it on, see the Dell Logo screen and the bar, shows F2 and F12 then it disappears and you get a black screen (backlight still lit). This occurs whether a hard drive is installed or not.

I can get into the BIOS okay.

If I then run diagnostics it goes to same black screen.

If I select F12 and boot to any option, ie hard drive, cd rom etc I get the black screen.

So could it be hard drive controller faulty ?

I would not think it would be the GPU as surely it would not display the BIOS and Dell logo if it was.

Not yet tried it with external monitor.

Sometimes I can see the Post message when the Dell logo disappears so it is displaying something.

If I could see the POST messages instead of the Dell Logo that would help.

My plan was to try and use an external monitor, and also if it lets me update the bios by trying to boot to a USB stick.

    Any ideas ?

    Hi Vark,

My name is Maran and I work for the Social Media and Community Team at Dell.
With Regards to your issue mentioned below are few troubleshooting steps that will help use to drill down to the problem.

Since you are able to boot in to Bios please check if the hard drive is getting detected or not.

If the hard drive is not detected then try re-seating the hard drive.

If the hard drive is getting detected You can try the pre boot system assessment (PSA) or the 32 bit dell diagnostic.

•How to run PSA- Press & hold the Fn Key & press the power button
•Next screen you need to see is the pre boot system assessment screen.
•Once you get to see the PSA screen you can let go the Fn key & proceed with the on screen instruction.
Or you can try the other option

    • As you mentioned, when you boot to F12 menu try to boot from the Resource CD provided by Dell & follow the these steps in the link.

After running these test you will be able to identify if it is a hardware or a software issue.

If till you are facing issue, The last option would be the connecting the external monitor to check if it is a video card issue or a LCD problem.

Kindly update the results, we would be more than glad to assist you.

    Thanks & Regards
