New Cpu....Better Memory?

WIth the help of you folks I am upgrading my E1505 cpu to a T7200 2.0 667 bus. Not to ask another noob question but does this mean I can now upgrade my memory as well? It is going from 32 bit to 64 bit. If so it would be a huge upgrade with the increase mem speed and being able to use 4 gb of mem.

Just to let you know you started 2 threads... Anyway, you can upgrade your memory to 4 gb. Using a 64bit OS depending on which one, will allow the OS to see and use 4gb of memory. However even now a days there are a select few in terms of programs and games that completely use all 4 gb. You might see some quicker responses but realistically it is going to be very minute.

I too upgraded my cpu to t7200 but I probably will not jump from 2 to 4 gigs. I don't run anything that uses that much on any regular base. Any game that uses more can't run well on the x1400.

yeah I know I made two threads. Must have hit the button twice.
So should I stay with my 2 gb or should I even bother upgrading to win 7 64bit if I'm not using 4gb? The dell website that the MB can only handle 2gb. I'm sure that was dependent on the CPU and bus speed.

The double post was probably not your fault... there's some bug in the backend that's messing with posting atm.

The official spec says that the E1505 can't take more than 2GB, but in practice, they can usually take up to 4. Depending on your configuration, you may only be able to address closer to 3, though.

How much memory you can use is nonetheless independent of CPU and/or bus speed, and typically a function of chipset/BIOS implementation.

My E1405 and E1505 accepted 2 x 2 GB DDR2 but XP could only utilize ~3.25 GB RAM, depends if you have on board graphics or the discreet graphics.

I have the on board graphics. Does running win 7 64bit even make sense with only 2 gb ram? I know that 64 bit is supposed to optimize the use more than 4gb.

Assuming you don't have any program compatibility issues, etc, you should not notice a practical difference.

Ken, I am running 1 stick 2g and 1 stick 1g, pc2-5300. 2-2g sticks only recognized 3.25, and seemed to throttle back speed more. This is with the A18 bios and win 7 64bit.

I have A18 as well. I think that I'll stick with 32 bit and use the 3gb. I have no need to move up to 64 bit. Plus some of my security apps don't run as well under 64 bit. I think with the new CPU and an additional 1gb of memory, I should see a healthy boost in performance.
