So, in summary, the throttling does occur, the overheating is still an issue, but there are a few software workarounds for people who don't stress the gpu to get acceptable performance out of their computer?

Oh, and dell gave me a full refund. Finally. Only took them a month to process it.

    .................
I don't think there is workaround for throttling issue except get replaced with new unit or full refund. This looks like more to hardware defect.

fwiw, it appears that most i7-720qm machines with a decent graphics card (or a HOT one), has a throttling issue - either the graphics card, poor heat dissipation, a (under)voltage issue, or something - I'm going to jump on the i5 bandwagon.

If I were you (if I have enough budget), I would go with i7-powered desktop. i7-i5 laptop still new in the market & still have problem here & there. I consider myself lucky because I don't have problem with throttling. Honestly, I just bought dell studio 1557 because the price was within my budget & it support virtualization technology.

I hope you have better luck with i5.

Well, I did go with a high end c2d machine, but there were so many things wrong with it (keyboard, deal pixels, hard drive noise) that I returned it hoping to order a replacement immediately, rather than hope it was 'repaired' properly - but newegg ran out of stock! So I'm pretty much stuck getting an i5 if I want a warranty and not a refurb. And asus warranties are awesome - 2 years + 1 year accidental? Can't beat that, considering the price of the laptop is usually lower than sony/dell/hp as well ...

Hi, Iīve read almost the whole 100 pages. I bought this laptop about 3 months ago and Iīm worried about the temperatures. My cpu (i7 720) is about 48-50 degrees while surfing the net. I bought a notebook cooler http://www.coolermaster-usa.com/prod...roduct_id=2865

and I donīt know why, but the temperatures stay almost the same. I think that the problem is that the laptop is not horizontal when I use it on the cooler, and I think Itīs designed to be horizontal. What do you think?
What can I do to lower the temperatures?
    Thank you

48-50c is not bad while Internet surfing. If you are hitting a lot of pages which contain Flash animations, your CPU will hit some processing causing it to be warm. My Core i5 runs about 10c cooler but it's a smaller chip, pushing out less heat.

If you are really concerned, you could contact Dell or look at some of the other threads which talk about applying new thermal paste to the CPU and/or GPU.

50C is nothing. I'm running Debian Squeeze on mine (got it about 2 weeks ago) and according to the acpi output it is running at 64C idling. I can get it down to about 60C if I turn on Virtualbox running windows 7 in a vm. It never drops below that though. I turned it off overnight, turned it back on and it was up to 60C within 10 minutes. Fan goes strong about 75% of the time with it cutting back occassionally, but not often.

Sounds like 60C isn't that unusual from reading about Acer and Asus laptops with the i7 as well though.

Does this match up with what most people are experiencing? It's well within the spec but still not a fan of it being so hot.

    Basically agree with Wildman comments.
46 – 50 deg are normal idle temps for the i7 720 and they will probably not go much lower even with a notebook cooler.
However I would expect the cooler to help when stressing your cpu where temps can go > 80
Stress your cpu and make a note of the max temperature then do the same test with your cooler, hopefully the temps should be a little lower.
Air is drawn through the vents underneath the laptop and then blown out of the vent at the back. Hopefully your cooler is blowing air into the vents underneath your laptop and not sucking the air out. Yes it does help if you can raise the rear of the laptop. (This is done naturally if you have the larger capacity battery) although you should not need to do this if your cooler is working correctly.
Finally, I have copper modded my machine and can confirm that it does help, particularly in reducing the gpu temps, although it is not for the faint hearted as you have to take the laptop completely apart.
