Glossy LCD Coating Scratched (Z96JS) - Repair Ideas?

Hi all,

I did some searching around but wasn't able to find any positive posts with a result/solution page for this kind of monitor. I have this beautiful Z96JS 1680x1050 glossy screen that I've been very careful with over the past couple of years, always using only a microfiber cloth and distilled/filtered water only to clean it - but I'm currently on vacation and today I took out a USB cable and it tapped the screen as it I lifted it up. I didn't think it was very hard, but it did result in a scratch. The scratch is about 1cm in length, and you can feel that its at least partly sticking out sharply at the edges - it doesn't seem to be too deep, but it is annoying and quite visible especially on lighter backgrounds - the actual LCD matrix itself seems not to have been affected, but rather just the coating/outer layers. I haven't tried anything yet...nothing seems to be confirmed/agreed on to be useful.

The screen is perfect aside from this one scratch, I'd very much appreciate any suggestions people have on how to fix it. I've attached a bunch of pictures to show what it looks like. I posted this here incase people with similar monitors might have some suggestions, from what I read there can be a lot of differences depending on what kind of coating there is on top of the screen, etc... I'm very happy with this computer and I feel otherwise that I could keep using it for at least another couple of years.

Any suggestions at all? Even to leave it alone? Some people have posted interesting ideas like Vaseline or some scratch remover products. I'm open to hear anything you guys care to say, and I'll post what I do do in the end, rather than leave it hanging.

This a suggestion, I have never done it before and can't tell you 'YES I KNOW'
My idea is to try to fix it the same way I fix minor scratched on car - clear acrylic coating.

creamy peanutbutter (or chapstick) and polish with a coffee filter. I would actually recommend NOT using it on your screen, but it will sometimes do a good job removing scratches from CD's.

I would recommend to leave it alone... there is a good chance that you damage the screen more in the process of trying to fix the scratch; than you actually help.

Ok, thanks for all your suggestions, it is greatly appreciated. I'm on vacation now and this is my only monitor, but just before I left I bought a 21" Viewsonic LCD HDTV to live beside my Z96JS because I do a lot of webwork and having that to display the page while I code on this really helps. For now though, this is my only monitor and it pains me each time to see the scratch...but ah well.

I'll leave it for now as is, but I'll eventually give something a try - I'll give a reply to this thread and re-open this in a few weeks or months and see if there's any other ideas. I'll definitely check back to it either way in the coming days, so please do reply if you see something - I'll see it, this isn't dead : )

have you contacted asus to see what they would charge you to repair it?

you could look for a replacement screen on ebay and try to pop in a new screen if you wanted to..

Thanks for the suggestion, I actually got the screen replaced a couple of times in the past because it would always flicker whenever at lower than 50% brightness (I believe I posted a detailed of this along with other issues and things with it on this board) - They gave me a Z96J screen by mistake once and it was only 1280x1024 - had to get a good WSXGA+ screen, but I know when I originally got it replaced ASUS wasn't happy, especially when I mentioned there were some dead pixels - after that they made sure to tell me continously when they replaced the panel twice and then gave me a whole new system a couple of months later that it was NOT because of the dead pixels but because of the flickering .

So I'd bet they'd charge me a fair deal - the national tech support center for ASUS used to be a 5 minute walk from my work, but since I've moved and so have they...but if I do go there for anything to do with my new ASUS MyPal A696 I'll be sure to remember and ask, thanks : )
