V1S Memory Upgrade

I am going to upgrade the ram in my V1S to 4gb (do lots of video work), before you all shout at me I already know the 32bit vista will only see around 3gb of the ram but sometime in the future I intend to upgrade to 64bit vista.

There is a lot I don't understand about ram so if someone who knows what works best for the Asus V1S then I would be grateful.

I have found ram on ebuyer but below is the info I know nothing about:

I know I need So-Dimm DDR2 200pin

Memory Speed - I believe I need 667mhz (pcs-5300)

What is non EEC memory (which is the best for me)

buffered or unbuffered?

what is CL5?

For EEC ram, unless you're a server or something sensitive you won't need EEC ram. Basically it corrects any parity in the ram is more reliable (but at a cost!)

For buffered vs unbuffered, this is what i found on another forum
"High density DIMMs have lots of chips on them and therefore possess a higher capacitive load on the address and control signals in comparison to lower density DIMMs. Some designers use redrive buffers on the DIMM to boost the signals to reduce system loading when compared to the same high density module without buffers. But the buffers introduce a small delay into the electrical signal, so adding buffers to a standard density module would have the effect of slowing down the signal, compared to the same low density module without buffers."

CL5 is the CAS latency timing. This is the delay in clock cycles to deliver the data. So a lower latency would be better. you can read up on this more in the link below

CL5 is standard for laptop ram.

Yeah, pretty much anything should work and there's going to be little real-life difference between different manufacturers...

OCZ 4GB Kit (2x2GB) 800MHz/PC2-6400 Laptop Memory Sodimm I know this is 800mhz memory but it's cheaper than the others.

Crucial 4GB Kit DDR2 667MHz/PC2-5300 Laptop Memory SODIMM Non-ECC

All are major manufacturers; you should be fine with any of them. You'll get ardent supporters and critics of all three.... just pick one.

Go with Kingston or Crucial. Extremely good quality control. Saves headaches with DOA and other problems further down the line.

In North America, Kingston is the only RAM company which pays for RMA both ways.
