Realtek HD Audio Drivers in Windows XP

I have been having no end of troubles with the Realtek HD Audio drivers in Windows XP (my G2S came with Vista). For a little bit of background information, see this thread.

For the last week or two, my computer has been crashing seemingly at random. I disabled the automatic restarting of my computer after system failures, but BSODs still rebooted my computer before I could see the error code. Eventually, in an attempt to fix my problems by updating my drivers (which Realtek has been updating a lot recently), I reinstalled my Realtek drivers, which caused them to stop working, so I uninstalled them. All of my crashing problems seemed to vanish. To verify it, I reinstalled them, and sure enough the crashes returned. (Specifically, Fallout will crash within 10 seconds of the main menu if the audio drivers are installed, but the random crashes have never happened when they've been uninstalled either).

After a little more research, I came across this bit of information: http://www.sudhian.com/index.php?/ar..._Audio/drivers. It seems that UAA support was intended for Vista only, and isn't stable in Windows XP implementations. The article may be a little dated, but this seems consistent with my experience, as I am very sure that the audio drivers are the only source of my system instability. However, I require sound on my computer, not just for enjoyment but also so that I can complete my foreign-language classwork.

So here's what I'm wondring: First, do (m)any of you have stable Windows XP systems with High Definition Audio setups, and if so, which audio drivers are you using? Secondly, do any of you know of any generic UAA compliant HD Audio drivers that I might try as an alternative? Alternatively, does anyone know of any generic (or even specific to my G2S) non-HD drivers that I might use? I really don't plan to use anything other than the two built-in speakers and occasionally stereo headphones, so I'll be sated if I can get my system stable with only 2 audio output channels. Thanks in advance; figuring out even this much information has been quite an ordeal.

I'm currently using R1.75, but I've also tried R1.74, R1.72, and whichever version of the drivers came on the ASUS drivers CD (can't remember the exact number of that one right now).

Also, I thought of one more question. When installing the Realtek drivers on Windows XP, do they work right away? Even on a clean install, I always have to install the software, uninstall just the drivers, reinstall the software, uninstall the drivers and then the software, then reinstall just the drivers for the audio to work. In that precise order, every time, if I want the audio to work on my system.

I've read in various places that special steps need to be taken in order to get the sound working on a G2S in XP, such as not rebooting after installing the drivers and instead going to the Device Manager and updating the drivers for certain hardware elements (although this did not work for me). Did any of you with XP G2Ss have to do anything special to get the audio working, or did you just install the drivers and have it work immediately?

I believe you need to install the Unified Audio Architecture driver before the audio driver

The way of installing sound will maybe work on other systems too.
I can not comfirm that.

There is still one problem with an "unknown device".

Go to device manager and go to system device and you should see a PCI Device with yellow mark, right click on it and click Update Driver, it should find the driver automatically and the sound will work on XP.

Well, Finally I resolved problem on my own. Followed tips from another forum. This is what I did:
-Clean installed the XP SP2
-Installed Microsoft UAA HD Drivers for SP2 before installing anything else.
-Instantly it detected and installed HD Audio bus and then detected HD Audio Device on it
-Gave location of drivers to saved file/folder from Internet
-Voila! Your new hardware is ready to use

However, I must say... Realtek should do something about this. Not an easy way to install. Most newbies will curse the system manufacturer. Infact, Microsoft should provide drivers for UAA HD within the OS itself in future versions.
