Latitude D410. 6 years old notebook that did not have a built-in optical drive when built.

most computers come with software to do this dependant on your motherboard.

some 3rd party ones are speedfan, everest, sandra.

Also if you want important software:

antivirus: free and good id recomend AVAST
3rd party defragment program is good the windows one sucks, check out disk keeper pro.

    Everything else is preference.

One thing about diskeeper pro, especially for laptop users, who tend to have all sorts of storage peripherals, usb keys and other external HDDs - make sure you turn "automatic defragmentation of newly detect drives" off. Otherwise everytime you plug in your ipod or usb drive or whatever, it'll start scanning and defraging it, and then you'll have all sorts of problems when you try to remove them.

Maybe also check this (XP) guide for the Essential Applications section. Although the exact applications will not be the same, the types of apps will usually be the same. Windows XP Installation Guide
