Re: Asus G51Jx Owners Lounge
Ok guys i did my repaste today but theres no difference in temperatures

I used arctic silver 5 and im not even sure if i did it right. While taking off the thermal pad on the heatsink i ripped it a bit too. I tried putting it on best I can but i dunno how much of a crud job like that might affect temps. Most importantly I'm not sure about how much paste to use and the process of applying it. I just put a blob in the middle of the gpu and stuck on the heatsink but i dont think it spread out evenly. What's going onnnnnn?!
Also some fun stuff while taking it apart. Freaked me out. The factory paste was stuck on the cpu so hard that when removing the heatsink the cpu came off with it. That was a fun 10 minutes of trying to figure out what I did wrong.
I'm also confused about the cpu application. For the cpu i just spread it out with a credit card rather than putting a blob on. My temps aren't any better though so is it the paste quality? Should i get IC7 instead?
I'll redo the application tomorrow if this is still bad.ASUS G51JX-X5: Intel Core i7-720QM, 1920x1080, 6GB DDR3, 500GB 7200 HDD, NVIDIA GeForce GTS 360M 1GB GDDR5. Intel Ultimate-N 6300.
Toshiba Satellite A300: Core 2 Duo t5750, 1280x800, 4GB DDR2, 320GB 7200 HDD, Mobility Radeon 3650 512MB GDDR2.

Re: Asus G51Jx Owners Lounge
Hello, shinakuma9, well, for the first thing you can leave the GPU & CPU there in the computer, there´s no need for you to take it out.
And for the hard drive stuff, you need to buy something called OBHD or Optical Bay Hard Drive, is a caddy so it fits the space due to the uncompatibility of the connectios, even though both are sata, the optical bay connection is different, you can find that things in ebay for 19-40 dollars, there are two formats 9.5 and 12.5mm (i think, but the 9 and 12 is ok, only the .5 or that, but there are only that 2 types) you need to take out your optical drive and measure it to know if 12 or 9mm.
I hope this info help you

Re: Asus G51Jx Owners Lounge
What I heard about that arctic silver is that you need a 200hr burnout so it achieves the best performance, I really recommend you the Noctua NT-H1 it starts with the max performance from the moment you turn on the computer.
The ammount of thermal paste is really little, imagine the thickness of a paper sheet when expanded (the thermal paste) if you put few thermal paste it doesn't work and if you put too much, there's no heat exchange, so it have to be like a 5mm drop, I encourage you to repaste it with this amount of thermal, also there are several ways yo apply it, like you say, with a credit card, with your finger in a latex glove or a plastic bag (you shouldn't touch the surface of the cpu or gpu, and a drop that will spread when you put the heatsink, but you have to "circle-move" the cpu to spread the paste better, I think that the credit card or finger one are good if you can't do the circle stuff move hehehe

Thanks

Re: Asus G51Jx Owners Lounge
Hello all,
My first post here. I was trying to reapply thermal past to my CPU and GPU last weekend and was only partially successful. With the help of the photos on the previous page I was able to remove my CPU. However, I was having to apply too much force to remove the heatsink from my GPU, thus I decided it would be best to leave it be to avoid accidentally breaking anything. I am suspecting that the heatsink has been cooked onto the GPU as I have been having some overheating problems for a little bit of time now... does anyone have any suggestion on how to gain access to my GPU?
Thanks
Edit: Also, if anyone could throw me some suggestions for a decent quality temperature monitoring program, it'd be greatly appreciated.Last edited by Trueblood; 1st May 2012 at 11:20 PM.

I wouldn't know how to solve your GPU issue, but here are some good programs to monitor temperatures:
CPUID - System & hardware benchmark, monitoring, reporting
Download TechPowerUp GPU-Z v0.6.0 | techPowerUpASUS G73JH-A1
17.3" LED (1920x1080) | Intel Core i7-720QM | ATi Mobility Radeon HD 5870 1GB GDDR5 | 14GB DDR3 1333Mhz | 128GB Crucial M4 SSD + WD 750GB 7200RPM HDD | Blu-ray | Intel N-6300 | Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit

Re: Asus G51Jx Owners Lounge
I had problems when removing the cpu from the heatsink but applying a little force with a plastic knife or a credit card to separate them can help you, you should do it with much care, you don't want the chip in the heatsink huh???
It is imperative for you to change the paste in GPU if you're having thermal issues, it can melt my friend and it won't be nice =S

Re: Asus G51Jx Owners Lounge
For those of you having trouble removing your heatsink from your GPU/CPU with old paste (or new highly viscous paste) I recommend letting your computer run for a little while before powering it down, unplugging it, removing the battery, grounding yourself, then working quickly to remove the heatsink. This is a fairly common trick with sticky heatsinks on desktops and works just as well on a laptop.
THE HEATSINK ASSEMBLY WILL BE HOT! You need to be cautious, but the heat will ensure the paste isn't dried to a crisp and "glued" on while you're working. With everything unscrewed you should be able to gently remove the heatsink very very easily by pulling upward with a slight wiggling motion as the heatsink begins to give. You shouldn't have to apply very much force as long as the paste remains warm.
I'll probably catch flak for this but if you're too slow you can use limited exposure from something like a hair dryer to heat the components back up. Do this as a last resort! Be very careful about what sort of hair dryer you use. Some have ionic somethingorothers or whatever voodoo they use nowdays. They are not designed to be used with computers and can cause damaging static buildup.
@shinakuma9 If you're worried you didn't do a good job, there's a number of repaste tutorials that are available online. It takes a few times before you get a feel for how much is too much or too little. Arctic Silver 5 didn't give me such good results either (I know it has a burn in time, by now it should be fine). I'm considering trying again with Jmalpica's paste.
I haven't had a chance to try yet but my next plan to try and bring my temps back down to "normal" (we all know this thing ran hot from day 1) is to try and modify a G50 back plate. I'll post results when I get a chance to do so.

Re: Asus G51Jx Owners Lounge
SteelGryphon, I'll be glad to see the backplate mod you're planning, as you say, these things run hot from day 1 and i'm considering the same thing, modding the backplate to have better temps.
