Well there you go...you proved your own supposition! It can indeed play Borderlands without fail and not overheat, crash and burn, or otherwise suffer any indignity that lesser notebooks might...no problema, amigo!

Mr. masterwares, all one does to use the 'Multiquote' feature here is to first click on the multiquote addendum below any post that you wish to quote *in line* as they will appear in the response column in the order you have clicked on them! Easy said, easy done, right? And after "collecting" all the posts that you wish to respond to *in line* in the order you clicked on them, then simply click on the "Post reply" box like you normally do when making a post here and BAM! All those nifty little quoted posts you clicked on appear, magically, one after another in the post reply box!

All you have to do is answer each post, in kind, in the space following its end quotes, between that point and the next post, and BAM! The system will automagically format your reply with the shaded text boxes that look so nice, and are so pleasant to the powers that be here, our "editors and post-minders, better known as 'Moderators'"...they like it to be used so much, if you're like me and tend to answer several posts in a row, rather than making a new post for every one that you wish to use in your "reply to post" function...using multiquote is much cleaner, saves space, and as above will endow you with special privileges with the Mods and Editors here no doubt! They likes us to use that feature A LOT!

That's the story, and I'm stickin' to it...!

I may have posted a guide to installing the Sony Optiarc 5730S-01 BluRay Burner/Reader/Writer sometime in the past but alas, I have no idea *where such a post lies* at this point, so better yet let me point you to the review I did for it at Amazon.com...and it's here under the Wavey Davey moniker...:

Sony Optiarc BD-5730S-01 6X SATA Slim Blu-Ray Writer Black Drive Bulk at ZipZoomfly

    Amazon.com: Customer Reviews: Sony BD-5730S 6x BD 12.7mm Tray SATA Blu-ray Writer

The 1st URL above will take you to ZipZoomFly.com where they have a special deal going on right now for this drive at the unheard of price of no more than $129.99 before any taxes and shipping, a KILLAH DEAL! My Lordie, I paid $224.29 for the drive at Amazon.com last May 2010! Holy Toleeedo! So that price at ZipZoomFly.com is the real deal, and you should get it there before they run out of stock--- or change their minds about it! Hah Hah! Amazing the things that I can find and turn people on to when I'm in the mood to do it!

But yessir, this drive is the real deal!

Now I have a caveat about the drive to share with my trusted fellow groupies here at notebookreview.com, and that's that my original Sony Optiarc 5730S-01 optical drive FAILED! Yessir it did, Sure as shootin'! I'd never have believed it but after some rather extensive burning sessions last summer I went to use the drive again the next day, or week, forget which really, anyway after the burning sessions I went to use the drive and ...NADA! NOTHING! ZILCH! All it did was click and clack and make all kinds of crazy noises when accessing content, so I had to find out ALL ABOUT the Warranty Department at Sony Optiarc-USA up in San Jose, California, and a nice lady Manager there who helped me out and REPLACED my Sony drive under warranty (2 years warranty it turns out!), and I was ever grateful for that special favor they did me!

Turns out the RETAILER you purchased the drive from is supposed to honor any warranty claims during the warranty period of two years from the date of purchase however! How about that? That is the gospel truth of the matter! So I wrote the powers-that-be at Amazon.com about the situation and I told them that I was not too overall impressed with the quality of Customer Service that I got regarding that topic of my failed optical drive UNDER WARRANTY at Amazon.com!

I had made a couple calls to Amazon.com about replacing the drive, but the CS Agents there kept telling me that they could only help me out during the 30-day "Return Window" for retail purchases at Amazon.com, ONLY! After that they assumed that the manufacturer covers any warranty claims! WRONG WRONG WRONG! I in fact gave the name of the nice, knowledgeable lady Manager, (in fact she runs Sony Optiarc, USA Inc it turns out) at the Optiarc company address, gave the nice Amazon.com principals the lady's email address, telephone number, proper street address for the Optiarc USA company, etc etc...in short I edumacated the nice people at Amazon.com 100% about THEIR RESPONSIBILITY(IES) under warranty according to Sony Optiarc, USA!

They were NOT pleased about getting my information!! In fact, matter of fact, (*GOSH I LOVE CAUSING HAVOC IN THE RETAIL CHANNELS!!*) Amazon.com immediately dropped the Optiarc drive from their catalog after that, and I mean immediately after that conversation with moi! Can you dig it!? I mean I thought I'd do them a big favor and tell them the truth about the situation before another customer had a failure and got WRONG INFO from Amazon.com CS Agents about replacing the drive under warranty, as it was the RETAILER who is responsible for any warranty claims--and they are supposed to handle the drive replacements!

So Amazon.com no longer sells this drive, how about that? Isn't that taking the bull by the horns and doing the right thing, NOT! I was shocked when they did that move, and I told my contact at Sony Optiarc, USA about the situation and she swore to me privately, off the record, that it was the wrong decision by Amazon.com to handle the situation the way that they did, ie wanting no part about or concerning warranty claims on the drives, but she also said it was "their internal choice and not ours" to make about selling such a drive as theirs, and they did choose to not carry it anymore post conversation with myself last summer...go figure!

That information is good JuJu for all of us who purchase these OEM drives from XXX Retailer, because it's the retailer who is supposed to honor and work with Sony Optiarc, USA about any potential failures or warranty claims under the banner of the Sony Optiarc 2-year factory warranty on the OEM drive assemblies, as long as they are distributed in the "Official Sony Brown Box" with the "Sony part numbers intact" with the sale, that is a real fact to keep under yer bonnet just in case you were to buy this drive and it were to fail on you...you do have recourse at the RETAILER level not the Sony Optiarc, USA company, it turns out!

That's the whole dope and the inside story of that deal, and what an amazing tale huh? I swear on my best moniker Wavey Davey that the above is 100% true to life and happened as I recalled it for you nice readers tonight, it is the gospel and you can take it to the bank! Yups I do NOT tell lies here at notebookreview.com! That's the truth, whole truth, and nothing but the truth!

Anyway, I got a nice new, fresh Sony Optiarc 5730S-01 drive out of my contact with the nice lady Manager/company chief at Sony Optiarc, USA Inc., and I thought that was as kind of a gesture as one could hope for regarding a product failure like I had...and they did this deed quickly and without any hassle also, just shipped me a new OEM boxed 5730S-01 drive, and man was I a happy camper about that!

My kit included a couple Sony BluRay discs, one RE and two regular BD-R disc, all nice and purrrrty in their Sony Jewel Cases, fresh minted out of Japan, not China, the real deal! There was an actual instruction booklet which I didn't get with the brown-box OEM setup from Amazon.com, and anywhere else I'd imagine also, and there was a set of mounting screws for notebooks to boot, with a small jeweler's screw driver all neat and handy, too!

All that because I managed to source the Sony Optiarc, USA Inc., company and find out their telephone number, FAX number, email addresses, and the like because that information was IMPOSSIBLE to come by at the Sony web site, this is dead to reckon CERTAIN! I couldn't find Jack Shorts about Sony Optiarc at the Sony web site, it was all Sony retail stuff and that was all she wrote there...there were plenty of retail notebooks WITH Sony Optiarc drives in them all righty, but no info on Sony Optiarc the company whatsoever!

I had to resort to a fine flavored friend over at a certain media publication for the Mac side of computing, one editor that I know there from a long, long time ago when they were called something other than MacLife...(they used to be called something pretty funny, which I can't--or won't repeat here!), and that nice guy editor emailed me Sony Optiarc USA, Inc's email address and I took it from there and got the ball rolling. But to think that anyone else probably would have had great difficulty pursuing any sort of warranty claim for a failed optical drive...I think so!

It just goes to show you the old adage about "it's not what you know, but WHO you know" is really, really important in this life, strange as it seems. I am just happy that I got a new drive, because I loved that Sony drive to death, as it is invaluable for my purposes! I am always using it to archive important data on BluRay BD-RE or BD-R discs, as they are sooo nice and permanent and robust media for storage, even more so than DVD ROM or CD ROM by another whole ball game/league of excellence, they really are.

I have run out of my favored DVD RAM discs late last year, which I used to use for archiving my important photo bundles from business, and my personal stuff too, so the BluRay media is my 2nd choice for keeping things safe and sound, yessir it is! Plus it's just handier than DVD RAM and can be relied on just as much for strength's sake, with the content of the discs being so heavy-duty and the like, robust, full 25-+ year archiving sustainability.

Well this is really getting to be off-topic by now, so I am stopping this little dittie right here! Good info on the Sony drives though, so file that and keep it safe, too!

    Hello!

I have an Asus G51Jx-X1 and since yesterday, it turns on and after 2-3 seconds, it dies. All times I try the same thing happens. I have tried to take the battery and power suplly off, hold on the power button for 45 seconds, reconnect and re-try: nothing.

The last time it was working, I was playing Starcraft II and I tuned it off normally, with no troubles.

    Please, help me!

    Tks!

Take off the bottom access panel and try one stick of RAM at a time to see if one module has gone bad.

PRivateReid, what do you expect to do with the fans?

Anyways, I just wanted to show the good cooling ability of the laptop.

Here i have an image of the temperatures after playing Borderlands for three hours. Look at the max column.

After 2 minutes, I came back and took this picture, look at the current value column. You can see that the system is able to cool down its components.

Mr. masterwares, are you playing the games overclocked or OEM stock settings on the video cards (of course), and the CPU the same?

There is a body of evidence apart from your post that says this laptop is designed plenty good for its purposes, and that the components are well enough good to cool themselves off, and that the design of the heatsink and the one-fan approach is aok fine also.

As for Private Reid's comment about NO POSTS for the past couple of days, we've got to remember that this laptop is now officially 1 year old, 1 year after being released for sale, at this time...many people who bought the thing have gone on to new laptops this year, you know...the old adage "if you can't have a new one every year, there's something wrong!"

I had the surprise of my life the other day and so I have curtailed 24/7 Folding@Home with both CPU and GPU at the same time, Hah Hah! Yup, I was sure as heck doing that hat-trick for the past couple of months, with good results, but no more.

I woke up the other day to find a black screen, with something like this in script across the the screen over and over again: "insert boot media or hit any key to continue boot sequence"

And man, was the notebook HOT HOT HOT! It had apparently suffered a thermal failure at some point, ie the fan could not keep up with demand perhaps, or the Thermal Sensor itself malfunctioned, and the thing went ballisticly "off course" and into a thermal shutdown the likes of which I have not seen it do, not ever before!

So from that day forward I am just doing GPU Folding@Home with the laptop when I'm not using it for other things, and so it will be from now on! I do not want to see that black screen ever again, like WOW! SCARY STUFF!

I let the thing cool down for almost an hour, until I couldn't feel any more heat coming out of the keyboard, no more excessive heat from the whole surface of the notebook, shut it down, restarted it... and so far so good! No more recurrences of this bad thang that happened, but suffice to say I will NOT be doing consecutive FAHome on GPU and CPU!!

The fact that it recovered 100% from the Thermal problem, whatever it was, is amazing to me...I've seen notebooks do that and never, ever come back before...including a MacBook Pro one time...a new one no less. We replaced it for the owner, that is my only comment there...its insides were just like putty and boiled electronic parts...a total loss.

When I opened up this one to change my RAM back to 16GB setup yesterday everything looked fine, no issues at all that I could tell. So much for failing at critical mass!

To our new member Akihiko...you're from Indonesia? Welcome to our fine little group! My wife is from Jakarta... Quite a gem that one is...wouldn't trade her for 100 MacBook Pro's! What model do you have, if any? Post up your specs and let us know when you can do such a thing (after 5 posts)... welcome to this thread!

We can use all the new members we can get, right? If there's anthing about this group it's that we range far and wide, with members from Down Under, the USA, France, Singapore, China, the UK, and of course our mentor is European also...janvandongen who we haven't heard from in a long while. I am going to write him a PM and see what notebook he ended up with after his G51JX-A1 basically melted down to the ground...HE had a complete meltdown, nothing could be saved he told me in a PM...sad to say. So Asus gave him ALL his $$$ back and he went from there...to where I know not.

I guess that the unexpected can occur with virtually any of these notebooks at any time, they being such finicky machines at times, the worst of it is when you have a complete meltdown like jan had...wouldn't wish that on my worst enemy.

Since nobody has any questions for me tonight I guess it's just a check-in and check-out session. I look forward to many more days in the cat-bird seat here for you nice owners of the G51 series notebooks, so keep the situations comin' and don't forget I'll help you out if I can...no matter what!

Ram coolers (copper) arrived and have been installed in every space possible, except for the ram :S (I have these other aluminum ones for the ram, I know they are not as good, but they fit really well, looks good and work to a certain degree) I expect another shipment (of the copper ones) in a couple of weeks

As for the fans, I'm not 100% sure yet, i have a couple idea's but I'll weigh up pro's and cons to decide, I'm ordering more fans next week.

I have this CRAZY idea of creating a vacuum in my laptop :S hahaha

EDIT: I use EVGA Precision to over-clock my GPU, and SetFSB for the CPU

Oh ok. Rexzer, I was playing at stock settings with a zalman nc2000 cooler.

I don't want to see what Oc'ing can do, I need the laptop to last at least 4 years and I've read that Oc'ing decreases the lifespan.
