Fantastic review Vic...

I've had my X1 since Thursday and it is incredable. I've learned alot from the various threads and everyones input, thanks to all.

I've been working with computers since 1972 and this is the first Laptop I've purchased. I've built 100's of desktops, my last one water cooled. This laptop is the first one to excite me. All I can say is WOW..........

I have to agree that this thing runs both quiet and cool.

looking closely at the grill above the keyboard I can see two nickle sized circles about 3" off center. The rest of the grill looks to me like it is solid.

I'd guess that those two circles are either the speakers or the air intakes.

Sounds to me like speakers. Now if you look under the bottom of the display on both sides I can see what look to my old eyes like little holes, no maybe just indents. I can't be sure?

So I tried a un-scientific smoke test with a candle. As one would expect smoke was pushed away from the exhaust vents out back.

I couldn't find a spot on the grill or under the display that drew air in. I stopped after a few minutes. Didn't want to get wax in the keyboard.

That would be just my luck.

Let me help you (at least a little). Does the clook tool for desktop HD 5870 work with de mobility HD 5870? If the answer is 'yes'', I found this: http://www.techpowerup.com/downloads...r_HD_5870.html

I'm new with stuff like overclock,so,if you post some tips, I would apreciate (like the acceptable range of temps/how to check if the OC is stable/how to make it become permanent)
thanks

Nice Review Vicious. Unbelievable base spec is under $1600 and is pretty full featured with that configuration. And at 8lbs, that is awesome for a 17".

Great review vicious! Thanks a lot for all your hard work and time spent!

I was wondering if you thought using a cooler underneath would help at all in extending the life of the laptop (since if/when I buy it, I want to make it last a long time)? Maybe an occasional use of a small fan blowing air towards the keyboard/screen would benefit it more (especially in the summer)?

Also, you didn't update the bios or any drivers before using it? Is it safe to assume that I wouldn't need to do any of that? I prefer to only use official updates on those two things, it scares me lol.

I do not think a cooler will help much since as far as I know all the air really goes in from the top for cooling the main components. I do not have one to test but I do plan to test to see if any air goes in the bottom vents at all, if so it can help some but really wont extend the life of anything because it all stays pretty cool as is.

I did not update anything for my system its right out of the box, not even a fresh OS isntall its the stock Asus all the way. I will dive into overclocking and updating stuff at some point but I want to finish all my benchmarks and stuff first and then after that I will pick the lowest games (crysis for example) and repost with overclocking res to see how much it helps.

Good to know. That's pretty amazing that it probably doesn't need any cooler.

I have a thread asking what things are most important to do after getting a new laptop, do you think you could tell me which things you update and test that an average person needs to do?
